Porcellio hoffmannseggi “Orange” – When size meets color
Porcellio hoffmannseggi “Orange” is one of the largest and most impressive isopod species currently kept in terrariums. This breeding form combines the impressive body size of the species with a warm, orange coloration that varies slightly depending on light and age. This gives each animal an individual, lively and surprising appearance. Precisely because size and color interact so harmoniously here, a special presence is created in the terrarium that immediately catches the eye and at the same time radiates calm.
The animals show a predominantly calm and relaxed behavior, but are particularly easy to observe in the evening and at night. During the day, they like to retreat under pieces of bark, stones or into deeper layers of substrate, while later they actively wander through the terrarium. They move slowly but purposefully, and it is precisely this decelerated manner that makes them so exciting to observe. They never appear hectic, but confident and balanced.
A well-structured terrarium with sufficient floor space is suitable for keeping them. A burrowable substrate of forest humus, leaves and rotten wood forms the basis, as Porcellio hoffmannseggi “Orange” likes to make contact with the ground. At the same time, the animals benefit from drier and wetter zones, as this allows them to regulate their own moisture requirements. Good ventilation is important, as waterlogging should be permanently avoided.
These Isopods are uncomplicated in their diet, but are grateful for variety. In addition to foliage and white rotten wood, they accept woodlice food, flower pollen, vegetables and protein-rich supplements very well. Due to their size and slow growth, a balanced diet pays off in the long term. Their development is leisurely, which means that each moulting stage is easy to follow and patience is rewarded.
Porcellio hoffmannseggi “Orange” is particularly suitable for keepers who enjoy large Isopods with a strong character and value observation rather than quantity. This species is not loud, not intrusive, but present and confident. This is exactly what makes it a real enrichment for every isopod terrarium and a species that is not simply kept, but consciously experienced.
