Gandanameno echinata – The black velvet spider from Africa
Gandanameno echinata is one of the rarer tube spiders and immediately attracts attention with its velvety black appearance. Its robust, bristly legs are particularly striking, giving it a defensive, almost spiky look. Although this species appears rather intimidating on the outside, it is usually calm and reserved in the terrarium. Those who are enthusiastic about tube spiders will discover Gandanameno echinata a species that differs greatly in appearance and behavior from classic tarantulas – and that is precisely what makes it so interesting.
The spider originates from Africa and is perfectly adapted to dry, rocky regions. The terrarium should be set up accordingly: A mixture of clay and sand that is stable enough for digging is suitable as a substrate. Cork tubes, stones or roots can also be used as retreats. Gandanameno prefer to build their typical burrows in quiet corners of the terrarium and line them with spider silk. The animals often sit deep in their self-made tube during the day, but come to the entrance at dusk or at night to observe their surroundings.
The humidity should be around 60-70% – but it is important that the substrate is not too moist. A targeted spray in a corner is usually sufficient. However, a water dish should not be missing so that the animal can drink at any time. At temperatures between 24 °C and 28 °C Gandanameno echinata particularly well.
As with many spider species, their diet consists of small insects such as crickets, crickets or cockroaches. The species is surprisingly active and likes to hunt. Observers can discover exciting behaviors – because Gandanameno acts quickly and purposefully once it moves out of its tube.
They are considered uncomplicated to keep, but keepers should have experience in dealing with rather defensive or shy species. Due to its hidden lifestyle and strong burrowing activity, this species is not a “showpiece”, but rather an insider tip for connoisseurs. However, it impresses with its unique behavior and unmistakable look.
