Wild form with elegance: Armadillo officinalis “Tamarix” for the terrarium
This beautiful Isopod is not a cultivated form or targeted color morph – Armadillo officinalis “Tamarix” occurs in nature with exactly this shade of color. The animals originate from a tamarisk region in the Mediterranean and have a unique, light basic coloration with dark banding. Their appearance is elegant – a great contrast to the often darker representatives of their species.
Like all Armadillo officinalis the animals of the local form “Tamarix” are also true specialists for warmer, rather dry habitats. In their natural environment, they colonize dry deciduous forests, rocky coastal zones and light shrub areas – ideal for Mediterranean-style terrariums with a well-ventilated, dry main zone and a small moist retreat area.
Characteristic of this species is its typical rolling behavior: When in danger, the animals curl up into a perfect ball. This behavior is not only exciting to watch, but also offers protection from predators – both in the wild and in the terrarium at home.
Unlike many isopod species A. officinalis are not necessarily dependent on permanent moisture. What is important is a good structure in the substrate, natural materials such as cork bark, leaves, mosses and a balanced climate with regular, but not permanently humid misting. This species is ideal for hobbyists who want to design their terrariums to be bioactive and close to nature – and who place particular value on authentic wild forms.
The Tamarix-Isopods are comparatively active and can be observed exploring and feeding throughout the day. Their calm but curious behavior makes them an ideal pet – both for Isopod newcomers and for experienced keepers who value natural forms and interesting local variations.
