Cubaris spec. “Lan Saka Tiger” – the tiger from the Thai limestone caves

Cubaris spec. “Lan Saka Tiger” is a fascinating species of isopod that originally comes from the Lan Saka region in southern Thailand. There it lives in the damp, cool areas of limestone caves and their surroundings, where it seeks shelter between moss cushions, leaves and stones. Its characteristic markings with contrasting stripes are strongly reminiscent of a tiger pattern – hence its name. The basic color varies between grey-brown and beige, while the bright, clearly defined stripes give it a particularly striking appearance.

In the terrarium, the “Lan Saka Tiger” is not only a visual highlight, but also an efficient soil police force. It decomposes organic waste such as leaves, rotten wood and food scraps, creating a healthy microclimate. It plays a particularly important role in bioactive set-ups, as it recycles nutrients in the soil and thus promotes plant growth.

A substrate of leaf humus, white rotten wood and added lime is recommended as the species is used to calcareous soils in its natural environment. Several hiding places made of bark, pieces of cork and stones offer protection and retreats. Moss cushions are ideal for ensuring constant humidity, as this species likes it slightly damp all the time, but never waterlogged. Good ventilation is important to prevent mold growth, while a humidity gradient allows the animals to choose between wetter and drier areas.

Cubaris spec. “Lan Saka Tiger” feels comfortable at temperatures between 22 and 26 °C. Under optimal conditions, the species reproduces reliably.

With its exotic origins, distinctive pattern and usefulness, the “Lan Saka Tiger” is a real asset to any naturalistic or tropical terrarium.
