Cubaris spec. “Phipun Dark Red” – the deep red beauty from southern Thailand

Cubaris spec. “Phipun Dark Red” comes from the Phipun region in southern Thailand and is one of the most intensely colored Cubaris species of all. Its name already gives it away: the basic color ranges from a dark, velvety red-brown to a deep burgundy red, which can appear almost black depending on the incidence of light. This rich coloration, combined with the compact, slightly curved body shape, makes them a real eye-catcher in the terrarium.

In its natural habitat, the “Phipun Dark Red” lives in damp deciduous forests, often in crevices under bark, between rotten wood or under dense foliage. The dense forests of this region ensure high humidity all year round, coupled with stable temperatures between 23 and 27 °C – conditions that can also be recreated in the terrarium. A substrate consisting of leaf humus, white rotten wood and a light addition of lime is ideal for the development of these Isopods.

Characteristic of this species is its calmer behavior compared to other Cubaris species. It often travels in small groups and prefers to show itself in the evening or after the tank has been freshly moistened. Moist retreats such as moss cushions or cork caves are particularly popular. A high basic humidity in combination with a well-ventilated terrarium is crucial to avoid waterlogging and mold.

In addition to their decorative value, the “Phipun Dark Red” are also useful co-inhabitants in bioactive setups. They decompose organic material such as leaves and wood and thus contribute to the biological balance in the terrarium. As with all Cubaris species, reproduction takes place via the female’s brood pouch (marsupium), in which the young animals grow up protected. Stable reproduction is possible under optimal conditions.

If you are looking for a Cubaris species that impresses with its exceptionally dark, elegant coloring as well as its useful function, the “Phipun Dark Red” is a rare and exclusive addition to your collection.
