Cubaris spec. “Red Edge” – the colorful ground police in the terrarium
Cubaris spec. “Red Edge” is a beautifully marked isopod species that is particularly striking due to its striking red edge on the carapace. This high-contrast coloration clearly sets it apart from many other Cubaris species and makes it a real eye-catcher in any terrarium. In addition to its attractive appearance, this species also impresses with its useful properties as “soil police” – it decomposes food residues, dead plant parts and excrement and thus makes a decisive contribution to the hygiene and stability of the terrarium ecosystem.
The posture shows Cubaris spec. “Red Edge” quite uncomplicated as long as certain basic conditions are maintained. A varied substrate consisting of leaf humus, white rotten wood, moss and some cork granules creates the basis for a healthy isopod life. This species likes to alternate between damp and dry areas, so the terrarium should always have a moisture gradient. Real plants, such as mosses, ferns or small ground cover plants, not only contribute to the overall visual appearance, but also provide the Isopods with additional hiding places.
The temperature in the habitat should be between 22 and 26 °C, with moderate to high humidity being preferred. Light spraying two to three times a week ensures that the humid area does not dry out. At the same time, good ventilation is important to prevent mold growth. Cubaris spec. “Red Edge” is rather crepuscular to nocturnal, but can occasionally be seen during the day if there are enough hiding places.
In breeding, this species is quite prolific with optimal care. The females carry their young in a brood pouch until they become independent – a fascinating sight if you are lucky enough to catch a glimpse.
Whether as a visually appealing breeding form or as a useful helper in bioactive setups – Cubaris spec. “Red Edge” combines beauty, usefulness and exciting behavior. For lovers of colorful Isopods, it is definitely an enrichment in the terrarium.
