The region has a warm, humid climate, while its deep soil and dense vegetation provide plenty of opportunities for burrowing and hiding.

In the terrarium, this species exhibits exactly the behavior one would expect from a true Chilobrachys: it digs, spins, and builds. Within a short time, a simple hole can develop into a branched system of earthen tunnels and dense webs.

And then the spider disappears inside it.

However, that doesn’t make Chilobrachys sp. “Kaeng Krachan” boring in the least. It is precisely the constantly changing habitat and the lightning-fast reactions during feeding that make this species particularly exciting.

A tarantula that has not yet been described

The “sp.” in the name is important. Chilobrachys sp. “Kaeng Krachan” has not yet been scientifically described as a separate species. The name is therefore used in the terrarium hobby to uniquely identify this form or locality variant.

Their final scientific classification may therefore still change in the future.

That is precisely what makes these species so interesting from a biological perspective, because sometimes tarantulas have already been successfully kept and bred for many years before their taxonomic status has been definitively established.

Dark, bold, and impressive

In terms of color, this species is significantly more subdued than some of its blue-shimmering relatives. However, it has a very striking appearance.

The base color ranges from dark brown to nearly black, although freshly skinned animals may appear particularly dark. Depending on the lighting, a slight sheen may also be visible.

Adult females reach a body length of approximately 6–8 cm, although individual sources cite slightly different measurements. Their leg span can reach approximately 14–17 cm. This makes them among the larger species within the genus.

Digging is part of the routine here

If you’re looking for a tarantula that spends the whole day sitting out in the open on a piece of cork bark, you should choose a different species.

Chilobrachys sp. “Kaeng Krachan” is a prolific burrower. As a result, it spends a large part of its life in tunnels it has dug itself. These tunnels are then lined with silk and often extended far beyond the entrance.

It is precisely this behavior that makes keeping them so exciting. You set up the terrarium today, and just a few days later, the landscape can already look completely different.

The spider decides for itself where to leave soil behind and where not to.

Having plenty of substrate is more important than having lots of decorations

For an adult female, we recommend a terrarium measuring at least 30 × 30 × 30 cm. The most important factor here is a deep substrate. A layer of about 15 cm of substrate suitable for digging is ideal, and even more if the terrarium is tall enough. Similar care guides also recommend at least 10–15 cm.

You can easily place a piece of cork bark in the soil to create a starting point for an entrance. Whether the spider actually uses it, however, is up to the spider itself.

In addition, small roots or other sturdy structures work well. They not only serve as decoration but can also be used as anchor points for the strong web.

Moist soil and plenty of air

The care guides differ significantly when it comes to the exact humidity levels. However, one point comes up time and again: This species should not be kept in dry conditions, but at the same time, there must be good ventilation.

For this reason, we would not fixate on a single humidity level.

Much more important is a slightly moist, deep substrate that retains moisture in the lower layers. The surface, on the other hand, may dry out slightly in places. At the same time, good ventilation prevents moisture from turning into permanently stagnant, stuffy air.

You should also avoid waterlogging.

Of course, a water dish with fresh water should always be in the terrarium.

Temperature

A temperature of about 24–28 °C during the day has proven effective for keeping these animals. At night, the temperature may drop slightly. Various sources on care guidelines generally fall within this range, even though the recommended values vary slightly from one another.

This species does not require any specific extremely hot spots. Much more important are stable temperatures and soil that does not dry out completely due to intense heat.

A true master of storytelling

Digging is only half the story. Chilobrachys sp. “Kaeng Krachan” can also produce large amounts of silk.

In the process, tubes, substrate, cork, and other parts of the enclosure are connected to one another. Over time, this can form a veritable network of tunnels. This web also serves to help the snake detect prey and stabilize the tubes it has built.

That’s why it’s a good idea to leave some permanent structures in the terrarium. The spider will take care of the rest.

Lightning-fast and defensive

It must be clearly stated that this species is not suitable for beginners.

Chilobrachys sp. “Kaeng Krachan” can react extremely quickly. When disturbed, it often flees into its burrow. However, if it is cornered or has no means of retreat, it may react quite defensively. It may assume a threatening posture and defend itself.

As an Asian Old World tarantula, it also lacks urticating hairs for defense.

Therefore, you should plan any work on the terrarium carefully and always leave the animal a way to retreat. Experience with fast Asian tarantulas is especially important when relocating them.

Feeding with a Surprise Effect

When it comes to food, this species often displays a strong hunting instinct. Depending on its size, suitable options include, for example:

house crickets

Crickets

Cockroaches

grasshoppers

Young animals are given correspondingly smaller prey.

Feeding at the entrance to the burrow is particularly fascinating. Often, you don’t see a spider at all at first—and a moment later, the prey has disappeared. A strong feeding reflex is also described in several husbandry reports.

Not always visible—but there’s always something going on

A large portion of the animal can remain underground for extended periods of time. However, especially at night, the spiders are more likely to be seen at the entrance to their burrow or on their web.

If you’re just looking for a showpiece tarantula to display as often as possible, you might not be happy with this one.

On the other hand, if you enjoy watching what a tarantula does with its habitat, you’ll find this species fascinating. With Chilobrachys sp. “Kaeng Krachan,” the terrarium itself almost becomes part of the animal.

Advantages at a glance

Rare tarantula from Thailand

Species not yet scientifically described

Body length approximately 6–8 cm

Leg span of approximately 14–17 cm

Pronounced burrowing behavior

Builds deep burrows

Produces a lot of silk

Rapid growth

Strong feeding reflex

Particularly interesting building behavior

Exciting Old World species for experienced keepers

Not suitable for beginners

Suitable accessories for your setup

Tarantula substrate – provides a surface suitable for digging and retains the necessary moisture in deeper layers.
Bamboo leaves – create a natural substrate structure and are ideal for the tarantula’s Southeast Asian habitat.
Insektenliebe Terrarium Moss – helps keep specific areas more moist and provides a natural look.
Insektenliebe Hygro-Therm – reliably monitors temperature and humidity.
Suitable Live Food – provides young and adult tarantulas with live food in the correct size.
Water Bowl – ensures the tarantula always has access to fresh drinking water.

Conclusion

Chilobrachys sp. “Kaeng Krachan” is a tarantula for keepers who want to observe not only the animal itself but also its behavior.
