Deroplatys truncata – highlight for mantid lovers<\/span><\/h3>\n

Deroplatys truncata<\/span><\/strong> is one of the most impressive <\/span>praying mantises<\/span> and is particularly impressive due to its unusual camouflage. Its body resembles a <\/span>dried leaf<\/span>which makes it almost invisible in its natural habitat.<\/span><\/p>\n

The animals reach a size of about <\/span>6 to 8 cm<\/span> and show mostly <\/span>brown to dark brown colors<\/span>. As a result, they look like dead leaves and fit perfectly into a natural terrarium. At the same time, their broad body shape gives them a particularly striking appearance. <\/span><\/p>\n

This species is one of the few representatives in which the female shows pronounced brood care behavior. Instead of simply discarding the ootheca and leaving it to its own devices, she stays close to it and actively guards it until the young hatch. This protects the delicate eggs from predators, parasites and unfavorable environmental conditions. This behavior significantly increases the offspring’s chances of survival and is rarely observed within the group. <\/span><\/p>\n

Suitable for keeping is a <\/span>high-built terrarium<\/span>as mantids need a lot of space at the top. A terrarium from about <\/span>20 \u00d7 20 \u00d7 30 cm<\/span> is well suited for adult animals. Important are many <\/span>Branches and twigs<\/span>on which the animals can stay and moult.<\/span><\/p>\n

The temperatures should be between <\/span>24 and 28 \u00b0C<\/span> lie. At the same time <\/span>Deroplatys truncata<\/span><\/strong> a <\/span>higher humidity of about 70-80 %<\/span>. Regular spraying is therefore important so that the animals can absorb sufficient fluids and shed their skin without any problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Compared to more robust species, this mantid reacts somewhat more sensitively to the wrong conditions. At the same time, the husbandry can be stabilized well if temperature and humidity are kept constant. <\/span><\/p>\n

Deroplatys truncata<\/span><\/strong> is a typical <\/span>ambush hunter<\/span>. The animals sit motionless in place and wait for prey to approach. As soon as a food animal comes within reach, they strike at lightning speed. <\/span><\/p>\n

The most suitable food is <\/span>flies, moths or other flying insects<\/span>as these are particularly well accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n

As with all mantids, they are kept <\/span>individually<\/span>otherwise cannibalism may occur. <\/span> <\/p>\n
