Porcellio scaber “Moonstone” – Robust Isopod with a special look<\/span><\/h3>\n

Porcellio scaber “Moonstone”<\/span><\/strong> is a particularly striking color form of the well-known isopod species <\/span>Porcellio scaber<\/span>. This species originally comes from Europe, but has now spread worldwide. It is also one of the most robust and adaptable Isopods in the terrarium hobby. <\/span><\/p>\n

The color form <\/span>“Moonstone”<\/span> has a <\/span>light, silvery to beige colored base color<\/span>which clearly distinguishes it from the wild-colored form. In addition, many animals show a <\/span>marbled pattern<\/span>which gives each animal an individual pattern. This makes a group of these Isopods look particularly varied in the terrarium. <\/span><\/p>\n

With a size of about <\/span>1.5 to 2 cm<\/span> belongs to <\/span>Porcellio scaber “Moonstone”<\/span><\/strong> is one of the medium-sized isopod species. At the same time, the animals are very active and can therefore often be observed in the terrarium. In contrast to woodlice, these Isopods are able to <\/span>do not curl up into a ball<\/span>but they quickly take refuge under leaves or bark.<\/span><\/p>\n

Suitable for keeping isopods are <\/span>isopod terrarium<\/span> as well as a well ventilated <\/span>plastic box<\/span>. Just one container from about <\/span>5 liters volume<\/span> is sufficient for a small group. At the same time, however, the animals benefit from larger tanks, as they can spread out better there.<\/span><\/p>\n

The recommended substrate is <\/span>nutrient-rich substrate<\/span>consisting of forest humus, leaves and white rotten wood, for example. In addition, a thick <\/span>Foliage layer<\/span> lie on the substrate. On the one hand it serves as food and on the other hand it offers many hiding places. <\/span><\/p>\n

The terrarium should be <\/span>partly moist and partly dry<\/span> be held. This allows the animals to choose their preferred location themselves. At the same time, this method prevents the entire substrate from becoming too wet. Temperatures between <\/span>20 and 26 \u00b0C<\/span> are ideal for keeping them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like many other Isopods, they also need <\/span>Porcellio scaber “Moonstone”<\/span><\/strong> a <\/span>source of calcium<\/span>. Therefore, always <\/span>cuttlefish or crushed eggshell<\/span> can be offered.<\/span><\/p>\n

The main food is <\/span>rotten leaves and white rotten wood<\/span>but the animals also like to eat vegetables <\/span>vegetables, flowers or isopod food<\/span> to. This allows the diet to be very varied.<\/span><\/p>\n
