Its sturdy, elongated body and numerous legs make it an interesting inhabitant for naturalistic forest terrariums.

But the chocolate millipede isn’t just impressive because of its appearance. Like many large diplopods, it exhibits fascinating behavior. It roams the ground in search of food, works its way through the layer of leaf litter, and regularly disappears completely into the substrate.

That is exactly where a significant part of its life takes place. This is because the substrate serves more than just a place for Ophistreptus guineensis to burrow. It also serves as a hiding place, a spot for molting, and, above all, an important source of food.

If you want to do more than just display millipedes—if you want to observe them as naturally as possible—the chocolate millipede makes for a fascinating pet.

A millipede from West Africa

Ophistreptus guineensis belongs to the family Spirostreptidae and is therefore one of the large, elongated millipedes.

Its natural range is in West Africa. There, millipedes of this group live primarily on and in the forest floor, where dead leaves, decaying wood, and other decomposed plant matter provide an abundant food source.

We should also recreate this natural environment in the terrarium.

A sterile substrate with a food dish in the middle therefore does not meet the animal’s needs. Much more important is a deep, structurally rich, and biologically usable substrate layer.

Why is it called a “chocolate centipede”?

The trade name describes its appearance quite accurately.

Ophistreptus guineensis displays various shades of brown and chocolate, which visually distinguishes it from black, intensely banded, or metallic-looking millipedes.

Individual animals may appear slightly lighter or darker. Lighting and the stage of molting also affect their appearance.

Its warm body color really stands out, especially against light-colored autumn leaves or when climbing on wood.

A stately ground-dweller

The chocolate centipede develops a long, cylindrical body with numerous body segments.

Most rings have two pairs of legs each.

When they walk, this creates the characteristic waves of movement that travel along their bodies. This movement is particularly fascinating to watch in larger millipedes.

These animals are quite capable of climbing and use flat roots or pieces of cork to do so. Nevertheless, the most important part of their lives takes place on and in the ground.

Calm behavior interspersed with periods of interesting activity

Ophistreptus guineensis is a peaceful terrarium inhabitant.

The animals search for food among leaves and wood, regularly exploring their surroundings as they do so. However, you shouldn’t expect to see your millipede on the surface at all times of the day.

Activity patterns may vary depending on temperature, humidity, and the time of day.

In addition, the animals regularly burrow into the ground.

A millipede that suddenly disappears for several days is therefore by no means necessarily sick.

Above all, the terrarium needs floor space

When choosing a terrarium, you should make sure it has a sufficiently large base area.

Although chocolate centipedes occasionally climb, they are primarily ground-dwelling creatures.

If you have multiple animals, you’ll need to allow for more space accordingly.

It is also important that the lower part of the terrarium be sufficiently deep. This is the only way to create a truly deep layer of substrate.

Roots, cork, and other natural materials can provide additional cover.

However, heavy decorations should always be set up securely. Millipedes burrow under objects, so loose rocks or heavy roots can pose a hazard.

At least 10–15 cm of substrate

For Ophistreptus guineensis, we recommend at least 10–15 cm of high-quality millipede substrate. For adult specimens, it can be even deeper.

This depth allows the animals to burrow in completely.

At the same time, different humidity zones develop.

While the surface may dry out slightly in some places, it remains moist longer in the lower areas.

This more closely resembles natural conditions than a thin layer of soil that is uniformly wet throughout.

Millipede substrate is food

Our millipede substrate serves several purposes at once.

It provides the animals with a habitat where they can burrow, while also containing fermented leaves and white-rotten wood.

These organic components are essential for nutrition.

This is because Ophistreptus guineensis feeds mainly on dead and already decomposed plant material.

The substrate is therefore actually part of the food.

For this reason, our millipede substrate should not be mixed with other substrates. Doing so would simply reduce the proportion of usable food.

Leaves as a natural, year-round food source

In addition, there should always be plenty of fallen leaves on the surface.

The animals can feed on it and seek shelter underneath it at the same time.

In addition, a layer of leaves reduces evaporation. As a result, the soil beneath it dries out more slowly.

Over time, the leaves are further broken down by microorganisms and eaten by millipedes.

As soon as the layer of leaves gets noticeably thinner, you can simply add more.

White rot is one of them

White rot-infected wood should also be available on a long-term basis.

This does not refer to fresh branches or hard, dry decorative wood.

White-rot-decayed wood has already undergone extensive decomposition. This makes it soft and allows millipedes to feed on it.

You can place larger pieces on top of the substrate or bury them partially.

This also creates a natural structure in the terrarium.

Fruits and vegetables are only supplemental foods

You can also offer fresh food.

Suitable examples include:

Pumpkin

Zucchini

Sweet potato

Carrot

Cucumber

Apple

Pear

Vegetables with a high water content, in particular, are often well-received.

Nevertheless, it should not replace a natural diet.

Millipede substrate, fallen leaves, and white-rotted wood form the foundation.

Fruits and vegetables are merely a supplement.

You should also remove any leftover food before it spoils completely.

Offer additional calcium

A source of calcium can remain in the terrarium permanently.

Cuttlefish shells, for example, are suitable for this purpose.

The animals can eat from it whenever they need to.

This is especially convenient because you don’t have to keep adding the calcium supplement to the fresh food all the time.

Warm, but don’t overheat

A warm tropical temperature range is suitable for Ophistreptus guineensis.

We recommend a temperature range of approximately 23–27 °C for practical keeping conditions.

A slight nighttime temperature reduction is easily achievable.

It is important not to simply turn the heat up as high as possible.

If the terrarium is already in a sufficiently warm room, additional heating is often not necessary at all.

Do not place a heating mat under the terrarium

A heat source should not be placed under the substrate for millipedes.

There’s a simple reason for that.

If it gets too hot or too dry for a millipede on the surface, it burrows deeper into the ground. There, it finds cooler and more humid conditions.

A heating mat placed under the terrarium reverses this natural slope.

So the animal burrows, of all things, toward the source of the most heat.

Therefore, additional heat should be generated as needed from the surroundings or, in a controlled manner, from the side.

Moist, but never soggy

The substrate should have a consistent level of moisture.

We recommend maintaining a humidity gradient.

One part of the terrarium can be kept slightly more humid, while another area near the surface can be allowed to dry out more at times.

This allows the animals to choose where they want to stay.

However, there should always be sufficient moisture in the deeper layers of the substrate.

Waterlogging and persistently muddy soil should be avoided.

At the same time, there must be adequate ventilation.

Why is my millipede disappearing?

If your Ophistreptus guineensis suddenly disappears, you shouldn’t dig for it.

Digging is part of normal behavior.

The animals seek shelter there, look for suitable humidity conditions, or prepare to molt.

Any disturbance can be dangerous, especially during molting.

The new outer shell is soft at first and must then harden.

That’s why the same rule applies to the chocolate centipede: Never dig up animals that have burrowed into the ground.

Group housing is possible

Ophistreptus guineensis can be kept with other fish of the same species.

If you’re keeping a group, you’ll need to choose a terrarium that’s large enough.

Even more important, however, is the amount of available food substrate.

More animals mean that fallen leaves, white-rotten wood, and the organic matter in the soil are consumed more quickly.

That’s why you should check the substrate regularly and replenish any material that has been used up.

When should I add new substrate to the terrarium?

Millipedes are constantly changing their substrate.

Over time, larger pieces of leaves and wood break down. At the same time, the substrate becomes finer and finer.

This is a good sign that some of the usable components have already been consumed and metabolized.

Then, fresh millipede substrate should be added.

However, you need to be careful when replacing it.

There may be eggs, young animals, or animals in the process of molting in the soil.

That is why a millipede terrarium should not be completely emptied without good reason.

Advantages at a glance

Ophistreptus guineensis “Chocolate Centipede”

African millipede

Family Spirostreptidae

Attractive chocolate-brown color

A calm and peaceful ground-dweller

Interesting Burying and Feeding Behaviors

Group housing is possible

At least 10–15 cm of substrate depth

Temperature approximately 23–27 °C

Consistent moisture content

A humidity gradient is recommended

Good ventilation is important

Avoid waterlogging

Millipede substrate as a habitat and food source

Provide food leaves on a permanent basis

White-rot wood is part of the basic supply

Fruits and vegetables only as a supplemental food

A source of calcium is recommended

Molting takes place in the substrate, where the animal is protected

Never dig up animals that have been buried

Do not place a heating mat under the terrarium

Suitable accessories for your setup

Millipede Terrarium Complete Set – offers ample floor space and room for a deep layer of substrate for digging, hiding, and molting.

Insektenliebe Millipede Starter Kit – includes basic equipment tailored to keeping millipedes and makes it easy to get started with the chocolate millipede.

Millipede substrate —serves both as a substrate in which millipedes can burrow and as an important food source made from fermented leaves and white-rotted wood.

Leaves – provide a natural, long-lasting food source, offer cover, and protect the ground beneath them from drying out too quickly.

White-rot wood —is one of the main natural food sources for large millipedes.

Insektenliebe Futterfels – allows you to present fruits, vegetables, and other supplemental foods in a clean manner without them resting directly on the damp substrate.

Conclusion

Ophistreptus guineensis, the “Chocolate Millipede,” is an attractive African millipede whose warm brown color quickly explains its fitting common name.

His approach focuses primarily on high-quality forest soil.
