Its robust build, bright yellow body segments, and unusual behavior make it an interesting representative of African invertebrates.

But its coloration is by no means the most fascinating thing about this species.

While many millipedes retreat deep into the ground during dry spells, Pelmatojulus ligulatus prefers to seek shelter under decaying wood or in existing cavities. In its native West Africa, it has even been found in termite mounds.

Its reproductive behavior is also remarkable. During mating, the male clings to the female using special adhesive pads. And unlike some other African millipedes, we have successfully bred this species here on multiple occasions.

Thus, Pelmatojulus ligulatus offers much more than just a striking ring pattern.

Yellow and black—a distinctive combination

The yellow-banded millipede is one of the species with particularly striking coloration.

Its body consists of numerous shiny rings. The front parts of the individual double segments are yellow to orange-brown in color. The rear sections, on the other hand, appear dark brown to nearly black.

This creates the characteristic banding that gave the animal its German name.

The color gradient is particularly interesting. While the yellow areas on the front part of the body often appear more intense, they can take on an increasingly orange-brown hue toward the rear.

The head and the tip of the abdomen are mostly dark brown. The red antennae and reddish-brown legs add additional pops of color.

With a body length of 12–14 cm and a diameter of approximately 13–15 mm, this species is classified as a medium-sized but exceptionally robust millipede.

Not every millipede belongs to the same family

Pelmatojulus ligulatus (Voges, 1878) belongs to the order Spirobolida and the family Pachybolidae.

This already sets it apart systematically from many large African millipedes of the family Spirostreptidae.

The species was originally described as Spirobolus ligulatus. Later, it also appeared in the scientific literature under the name Pachybolus ligulatus.

Its current scientific name is Pelmatojulus ligulatus.

Its robust build and distinctive banding are typical characteristics that aid in identification. However, there are species within the genus that look similar. Therefore, scientific identification should not be based solely on coloration.

From Togo through Benin to Nigeria

The natural range of Pelmatojulus ligulatus is in West Africa.

Evidence has been found particularly in Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. Data is also available from Ghana.

These animals primarily inhabit secondary rainforests. These are forests that have regenerated following previous human interference.

Interestingly, the species is not limited exclusively to pristine forest areas.

In Nigeria, for example, Pelmatojulus ligulatus has also been observed on the campus of the University of Ibadan.

This shows that suitable hiding places, food, and humidity conditions may be more important to this species than a completely undisturbed habitat.

A millipede that uses termite mounds as a hiding place

One of the most interesting characteristics of Pelmatojulus ligulatus is its behavior during the dry season.

In Nigeria, the dry season typically lasts from November through February.

During this time, the animals seek out sheltered spots. They have been observed, for example, under rotten wood and in the nests of the termite species Macrotermes nigeriensis.

It is particularly noteworthy that Pelmatojulus ligulatus does not generally attempt to burrow as deep as possible into the ground during periods of drought.

Instead, he often seeks out hiding places off to the side.

This leads to an important insight for terrarium care: In addition to a suitable substrate, this species needs easily accessible, sheltered hiding places.

Flat pieces of cork and larger pieces of white-rotten wood are therefore particularly useful.

With the rainy season, life begins on the surface

In its native habitat, the behavior of Pelmatojulus ligulatus changes significantly with the seasons.

Especially at the start of the rainy season—roughly between March and May—the animals can be seen more often at the surface at night.

During the day, however, they retreat under leaves, rotten wood, or other protective materials.

That explains why you won’t see your yellow-banded centipede all the time.

Even in a terrarium, it can remain hidden for long periods of time and then suddenly become active at dusk.

That’s exactly why it’s worth watching the animals in the evening.

Additional bright terrarium lighting is not necessary for this species, which is primarily crepuscular and nocturnal.

An unusual detail about mating

Pelmatojulus ligulatus also exhibits interesting behavior during reproduction.

Adult males have special pads on the soles of their feet.

These help them cling to the female’s smooth body during mating.

The male often approaches from behind and climbs onto the female.

Meanwhile, the female can continue moving and even feed.

The male then attempts to position his front body in a suitable position for copulation.

In the wild, mating was observed especially at the beginning of the rainy season.

This connection between the season and reproduction makes the species interesting even for experienced breeders.

Breeding has been successful several times at “Insektenliebe”

Pelmatojulus ligulatus is a species of millipede with which we have already had some success in breeding.

We have successfully bred them on several occasions.

This is particularly encouraging, since many African millipedes are difficult to breed in a terrarium.

Based on our experience so far, the animals reach sexual maturity at around two years of age.

For successful breeding, the most important factors are long-term stable housing, sufficient food, and as few disturbances as possible.

In addition, the substrate should be checked regularly for its nutrient content and for any remaining leaf and wood debris.

Alternating between slightly drier and slightly wetter periods could also be beneficial. However, such a change should be made cautiously and should never result in the substrate drying out completely.

Why We Don’t Unreservedly Recommend This Style for Beginners

At first glance, *Pelmatojulus ligulatus* seems straightforward.

These animals are peaceful, do not require elaborate lighting, and feed mainly on dead plant matter.

Nevertheless, we rate the difficulty level as moderate.

The main reason is diet.

This species requires a constant supply of large quantities of white-rotted wood and fallen leaves. If you only offer them vegetables occasionally, you will not be meeting their needs.

In addition, the substrate must be checked regularly and replenished as needed.

However, anyone who already has experience with millipedes and can ensure a steady supply of suitable organic material will find this species to be an exceptionally interesting pet.

The Right Terrarium: Better Wide Than Tall

Pelmatojulus ligulatus spends most of its life on the ground.

A strong tendency to climb is not one of its typical characteristics.

Therefore, we recommend a terrarium with a minimum floor area of 40 × 30 cm for a small group. If there are several adult animals, it is advisable to provide accordingly more space.

However, it does not need to be particularly tall.

What’s much more important is that you can add a sufficiently deep layer of substrate while still leaving room for shallow hiding spots.

Larger pieces of cork, bark, and rotten wood are particularly well-suited for this purpose.

Hiding spots are more important than branches to climb on

While many millipedes occasionally explore roots and branches, Pelmatojulus ligulatus spends most of its time near the ground.

That’s why you don’t need elaborate climbing structures with this type.

Instead, we recommend providing several low-lying hiding spots.

Cork bark, larger pieces of white-rotten wood, or natural cavities are particularly well-suited for this purpose.

This setup is much better suited to the animals’ natural behavior than a terrarium with many vertical branches.

Heavy objects should always be placed securely.

At least 10 cm of high-quality growing medium

The substrate should be laid to a depth of at least 10 cm.

We recommend our millipede substrate for this purpose.

It contains fermented leaves and white-rot-decayed wood, thereby providing both a suitable habitat and important food sources.

After all, millipedes don’t just eat food from the surface.

They also break down organic material that is already in the substrate.

That is why our millipede substrate should not be mixed with other substrates.

For adult animals, the substrate layer can be a little deeper.

White rot is particularly important for this species

If we had to single out one component of the diet of Pelmatojulus ligulatus, it would be white-rotted wood.

The animals need a sufficient amount of this on an ongoing basis.

This is wood that has already been decomposed by fungi, causing it to become soft and brittle.

Hard, dry decorative wood is not an equivalent substitute.

Larger pieces of white-rotten wood can be placed directly on the substrate.

As a result, they serve as both a food source and a hiding place.

You must never run out of leaves for feed

In addition to white-rotted wood, fallen leaves are the second most important part of their diet.

A generous layer of leaf litter should therefore be present at all times.

The animals use the leaves for food and as cover.

It also protects the underlying soil layers from drying out too quickly.

One particularly convenient feature is that you can simply add more leaves as the existing layer gets thinner.

Fresh food is more of an afterthought

Pelmatojulus ligulatus may occasionally eat vegetables, flowers, or other supplemental foods.

However, based on our experience so far, this species appears to be much more dependent on leaves and white-rotten wood.

So don’t be surprised if fresh vegetables don’t get as much attention as they do with other millipedes.

Suitable additions include, for example:

Zucchini

Pumpkin

Carrot

Sweet potato

Small amounts of flowers

Occasional, appropriate protein-rich supplemental feed

However, it is important to remember that fresh food is never a substitute for a natural, balanced diet.

25–28 °C and high humidity

Pelmatojulus ligulatus requires warm and humid conditions.

We recommend a temperature of 25–28 °C.

The relative humidity should be around 90 %.

However, it is crucial that the high humidity not be caused by constantly wet substrate and poor ventilation.

The substrate should have a good level of moisture without being completely saturated.

In addition, there must be sufficient air exchange.

A thick layer of leaves helps retain moisture in the soil.

Ventilation is important even when humidity is high

Especially when it comes to tropical millipedes, people often try to keep as much moisture as possible inside the terrarium.

However, it is important not to forget about ventilation.

Pelmatojulus ligulatus requires a humid environment, but by no means one that is constantly stuffy.

That is why the terrarium should have adequate ventilation.

Moisture is best regulated through the substrate and a protective layer of leaves.

Advantages at a glance

Pelmatojulus ligulatus (Voges,
