That sounds spectacular. Scientifically, however, intelligence cannot be compared on a simple scale between such completely different animals.<\/p>\n\n
So a jumping spider isn\u2019t simply a tiny sheep with eight legs.<\/p>\n\n
But that doesn’t make it any less impressive.<\/p>\n\n
After all, jumping spiders can actually learn to remember things, make decisions, plan detours, distinguish between quantities, and apparently even recognize individual members of their own species.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n And all of this takes place in a nervous system that is minuscule compared to the brain of a vertebrate. That is precisely why researchers are now intensively studying the question:<\/p>\n\n Just how much thinking can actually fit into a jumping spider?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n We humans tend to associate intelligence with large brains.<\/p>\n\n Humans have large brains. Great apes do as well. Dolphins, elephants, and crows are considered intelligent.<\/p>\n\n A jumping spider, on the other hand, fits comfortably on a fingertip.<\/p>\n\n At first glance, the comparison seems absurd.<\/p>\n\n However, in behavioral research, it is not just the size of a brain that matters. What matters is what an animal can do with its existing nerve cells.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Can it learn from experience?<\/p>\n\n Can it modify a strategy once it has been learned?<\/p>\n\n Can it store information?<\/p>\n\n Can it choose between several options?<\/p>\n\n Can it find a solution even if the goal isn\u2019t visible at the moment?<\/p>\n\n It is precisely in tasks like these that jumping spiders become interesting.<\/p>\n\n They don\u2019t have a small human brain. Instead, their information processing is highly specialized for the things that are important to their survival: vision, hunting, orientation, and quick decision-making.<\/strong> Modern review articles therefore consider jumping spiders to be a particularly interesting model for comparative cognitive research.<\/p>\n\n One of the most famous examples comes from jumping spiders of the genus Portia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n Portia<\/em> is exceptional even among jumping spiders. These animals often hunt other spiders\u2014prey that can also react quickly and, in the worst case, bite back.<\/p>\n\n Blindly jumping at them would be a pretty poor strategy.<\/p>\n\n In a classic experiment, a Portia<\/em> was placed on a raised platform.<\/p>\n\n From there, it could see two possible paths.<\/p>\n\n One led over various bars and ramps to a prey spider.<\/p>\n\n The other led to nowhere.<\/p>\n\n The key point here:<\/p>\n\n Once the jumping spider had set off on her path, she could no longer see the destination in some cases.<\/p>\n\n So she had to get her bearings first and then follow a path, even though the prey had disappeared from her field of vision at times.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Think of it this way, to put it simply:<\/p>\n\n You\u2019re standing on an observation tower.<\/p>\n\n Below, you see two forest trails.<\/p>\n\n The one on the left winds around a hill and leads to your car. The one on the right looks just as good at first, but eventually ends at a fence.<\/p>\n\n Once you leave the tower, you can no longer see your car.<\/p>\n\n So you have to decide which path to take before you set off.<\/p>\n\n This is exactly the kind of problem the spiders solved.<\/p>\n\n Further studies showed that Portia<\/em> can even choose routes where she first has to move away from her prey<\/strong> in order to reach it later.<\/p>\n\n That sounds obvious, but it isn’t.<\/p>\n\n An animal that were to follow only the current visual stimulus would always have to run toward its prey.<\/p>\n\n Portia<\/em> can apparently do something else:<\/p>\n\n ignore the immediate target, choose an alternative route, and only head back toward it later.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n It gets even more fascinating outside the lab.<\/p>\n\n In the wild, too, Portia jumping spiders<\/em> have been observed taking complicated detours to reach web-building spiders.<\/p>\n\n In the process, the prey can disappear completely from its field of vision for extended periods.<\/p>\n\n For example, the jumping spider runs around vegetation, changes its position, and then approaches the web from a more advantageous angle.<\/p>\n\n This doesn\u2019t automatically mean that a jumping spider thinks in our human sense:<\/p>\n\n \u201cIf I run this way, I\u2019ll be behind her in ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n But her behavior suggests that she can store<\/strong> information about a target internally and reuse it later<\/strong>. It is precisely this question of internal representations that has made Portia<\/em> so interesting to cognitive scientists.<\/p>\n\n Now it gets even more curious.<\/p>\n\n Researchers studied Portia africana<\/em> to see if the spiders can distinguish how many other spiders they see.<\/p>\n\n To do this, they used a method that can be described, in simple terms, as an \u201cexpectation violation<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n For example, a jumping spider would first see a certain number of prey items.<\/p>\n\n Then its view was briefly interrupted.<\/p>\n\n When she could see the animals again, their number had changed.<\/p>\n\n The crucial question was:<\/p>\n\n Does the spider notice that something is wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n And indeed, the animals reacted differently when the expected number suddenly changed.<\/p>\n\n The pattern was particularly interesting.<\/p>\n\n The results suggest that Portia<\/em> can distinguish between one, two, and \u201cmore than two.\u201d<\/strong> Changes between larger numbers, such as three and four, however, were not recognized in the same way.<\/p>\n\n One shouldn\u2019t jump to the conclusion that:<\/p>\n\n \u201cJumping spiders can do math.\u201d<\/p>\n\n That would be an exaggeration.<\/p>\n\n But apparently, at least a simple form of set representation<\/strong> exists.<\/p>\n\n Or, to put it more simply:<\/p>\n\n A jumping spider seems to distinguish between<\/p>\n\n one spider, two spiders, and several spiders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n in its mind.<\/p>\n\n That\u2019s pretty amazing for an animal of that size.<\/p>\n\n Intelligence isn\u2019t just about learning something.<\/p>\n\n It gets even more interesting when an animal realizes:<\/p>\n\n The old rule no longer works.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n This is exactly what was investigated in the jumping spider Marpissa muscosa<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n The spiders first learned to associate certain colors or positions with a food reward.<\/p>\n\n For example, you could think of it simply like this:<\/p>\n\n Yellow = food.<\/p>\n\n Blue = no food.<\/p>\n\n The spiders learned this association.<\/p>\n\n Then the researchers reversed the rule.<\/p>\n\n Suddenly, the decision that had previously been correct was wrong.<\/p>\n\n Now the spiders had to, so to speak, overwrite their old experience and learn a new rule.<\/p>\n\n And that\u2019s exactly what they were able to do.<\/p>\n\n The spiders were able to learn associations and then reverse them<\/strong>. In doing so, individual spiders even exhibited different strategies: Some relied more on colors, while others relied more on positions.<\/p>\n\n This is important.<\/p>\n\n Because completely rigid behavior would work something like this:<\/p>\n\n \u201cI\u2019ve learned that yellow means food. So I\u2019ll always choose yellow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n Flexible behavior, on the other hand, means:<\/p>\n\n \u201cYellow has worked so far. Now it\u2019s not working anymore. So I\u2019m changing my strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n It is precisely this flexibility that is a key foundation of cognition.<\/p>\n\n Jumping spiders are extremely visually oriented animals.<\/p>\n\n Just how refined this visual processing can be was demonstrated by a particularly unusual experiment.<\/p>\n\n Researchers presented jumping spiders with so-called point-light displays<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n You don\u2019t actually see a real animal.<\/p>\n\n Imagine a completely black surface on which only a few bright dots appear.<\/p>\n\n These points are located where, for example, a spider\u2019s joints would be.<\/p>\n\n When the dots move together, our brain realizes with astonishing speed:<\/p>\n\n Something alive is moving there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Even though we don\u2019t see a body at all.<\/p>\n\n Even jumping spiders can distinguish between such biologically driven movement patterns and random movement.<\/p>\n\n That doesn\u2019t mean a jumping spider consciously ponders the difference between \u201calive\u201d and \u201cnot alive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n But its nervous system apparently does more than just analyze:<\/p>\n\n \u201cSomething is moving.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n It also processes:<\/p>\n\n How is it moving?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n That\u2019s a significant difference.<\/p>\n\n Another jumping spider with impressive abilities is Evarcha culicivora<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n This species has an unusual preference: among other things, it hunts blood-filled female mosquitoes.<\/p>\n\n Researchers wanted to find out which visual characteristics the spider uses to identify its preferred prey.<\/p>\n\n To do this, they did not show it real mosquitoes.<\/p>\n\n Instead, they used highly simplified representations\u2014some of which were almost like line drawings.<\/p>\n\n Despite this simplification, the spiders were able to recognize and categorize relevant features of their preferred prey.<\/p>\n\n This is roughly comparable to a child recognizing a drawn dog, even though the drawing consists of only a few lines.<\/p>\n\n Of course, the underlying brain processes are completely different.<\/p>\n\n But the principle is interesting:<\/p>\n\n The spider apparently does not necessarily need a perfect photographic image.<\/p>\n\n Certain characteristic features are sufficient<\/strong> for its nervous system to classify something into a category.<\/p>\n\n Many of the most spectacular experiments on jumping spider intelligence were conducted with Portia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n It\u2019s important to note this.<\/p>\n\n One shouldn\u2019t automatically apply findings from a single genus to each of the more than 6,000 species of jumping spiders.<\/p>\n\n But now there\u2019s also some very exciting research being conducted directly on one of the most famous jumping spiders of all:<\/p>\n\n Phidippus regius.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n In 2025, a study was published that examined whether P. regius can distinguish between different members of its own species.<\/p>\n\n During their first encounter, the test animals showed clear interest in one another.<\/p>\n\n When the same spider reappeared later, their behavior changed.<\/p>\n\n If, on the other hand, a different<\/strong> spider was presented, the interest increased again.<\/p>\n\n The researchers interpret the results as evidence that Phidippus regius<\/em> can distinguish familiar individuals from unfamiliar ones and retain information about them for several hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n This is particularly noteworthy because Phidippus regius are not highly social animals like humans, monkeys, or sheep.<\/p>\n\n They are mostly solitary.<\/p>\n\n Nevertheless, their nervous system seems capable of processing the information<\/p>\n\n \u201cI already know this spider\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n from<\/p>\n\n \u201cThis spider is new\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n .<\/p>\n\n For owners of Phidippus regius<\/em> in particular, this is likely one of the most exciting discoveries of recent years.<\/p>\n\n Here, we need to remain scientifically rigorous.<\/p>\n\n The fact that Phidippus regius<\/em> can distinguish between other jumping spiders does not automatically<\/strong> mean that your jumping spider recognizes you as an individual person.<\/p>\n\n To date, there is no convincing evidence that a P. regius recognizes its owner in the same way that a dog or cat does.<\/p>\n\n However, that doesn’t mean she can’t tell you apart at all.<\/p>\n\n Jumping spiders react to movement, shape, contrast, and experience. They can also learn and get used to recurring stimuli.<\/p>\n\n So if your jumping spider eventually seems less wary around you, it may well have learned that:<\/p>\n\n This regularly recurring stimulus is not an immediate danger.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n However, we don\u2019t currently know whether this leads to an individual concept of \u201cmy human.\u201d<\/p>\n\n That\u2019s an important distinction.<\/p>\n\n Now let\u2019s return to our original question.<\/p>\n\n No\u2014at least, that cannot be seriously claimed from a scientific standpoint.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n There is no universally accepted intelligence test where one could simply say:<\/p>\n\n Jumping spider: 70 points.<\/p>\n\n Sheep: 70 points.<\/p>\n\n So just as smart.<\/p>\n\n A sheep has entirely different cognitive specializations.<\/p>\n\n Sheep are social mammals and, for example, have an impressive ability to recognize faces.<\/p>\n\n In a well-known study, sheep were able to recognize up to 50 other sheep’s faces over a period of more than two years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n In another experiment, sheep even learned to distinguish between photographs of human faces. They were subsequently able to recognize faces they had been trained to recognize from a slightly different perspective. A human caretaker with whom they were very familiar was even identified in photographs without any prior training.<\/p>\n\n This is a completely different cognitive world from that of a jumping spider.<\/p>\n\n A direct comparison would therefore make about as much sense as asking:<\/p>\n\n Which is more powerful\u2014a race car or an excavator?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n The race car is incredibly fast.<\/p>\n\n The excavator, on the other hand, can move things that the race car would be completely useless at handling.<\/p>\n\n Both are optimized for different tasks.<\/p>\n\n The same is true of brains.<\/p>\n\n With animals, we often look for a hierarchy.<\/p>\n\n Humans at the top.<\/p>\n\n Then monkeys.<\/p>\n\n Then dolphins.<\/p>\n\n Then dogs.<\/p>\n\n Then maybe birds.<\/p>\n\n And somewhere way down at the bottom come insects and spiders.<\/p>\n\n But modern cognitive research is making this very idea increasingly problematic.<\/p>\n\n Evolution doesn\u2019t build brains to win an intelligence test.<\/p>\n\n It builds nervous systems that must solve specific problems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n For a jumping spider, that means:<\/p>\n\n Recognizing prey.<\/p>\n\n Estimating distances.<\/p>\n\n Distinguishing dangers.<\/p>\n\n Calculate jumps.<\/p>\n\n Find suitable paths.<\/p>\n\n Store information.<\/p>\n\n Make decisions.<\/p>\n\n And sometimes follow a plan, even though the actual goal is no longer visible at the moment.<\/p>\n\n Your brain seems to be remarkably capable of handling exactly this kind of world.<\/p>\n\n Part of this capability is likely due to the jumping spiders\u2019 extraordinary visual system.<\/p>\n\n Their eight eyes perform different functions.<\/p>\n\n The large front compound eyes, in particular, provide exceptionally detailed vision. Other eyes, on the other hand, take in a wide area of the surroundings and are sensitive to movement.<\/p>\n\n You can think of it, in simple terms, as a surveillance system:<\/p>\n\n The outer cameras report:<\/p>\n\n “Something’s moving!”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Then the jumping spider turns its body toward it.<\/p>\n\n Now the high-resolution main eyes take over:<\/p>\n\n \u201cWhat exactly is that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Researchers describe this system as a form of selective visual attention: Different eyes provide different streams of information, which the nervous system then integrates.<\/p>\n\n Perhaps this is precisely what gives rise to some of the behavior that makes jumping spiders seem so observant to us.<\/p>\n\n Of course, we shouldn\u2019t anthropomorphize jumping spiders.<\/p>\n\n When a Phidippus regius<\/em> turns its head\u2014or rather, its thorax\u2014and stares at us with its large compound eyes, it\u2019s probably not thinking:<\/p>\n\n \u201cAh, Frank\u2019s back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n At least, we can’t say that.<\/p>\n\n But what we can say with a fair degree of certainty by now is:<\/p>\n\n She is by no means just a little automaton that reacts to stimuli according to a fixed program.<\/p>\n\n While she sits there looking at you, her nervous system is processing information.<\/p>\n\n She decides which stimulus to pay attention to.<\/p>\n\n She can store experiences.<\/p>\n\n She can modify her behavior based on new experiences.<\/p>\n\n And in at least some species of jumping spiders, this processing can go so far that they choose a complicated detour, distinguish between quantities, or recognize an individual they have seen before.<\/p>\n\n We don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n And maybe that’s exactly the most fascinating part of the story.<\/p>\n\n We can set up experiments.<\/p>\n\n We can observe what decision a spider makes.<\/p>\n\n We can test what it remembers.<\/p>\n\n We can check whether it changes its strategy.<\/p>\n\n But we can\u2019t find out what this information processing feels like to a jumping spider<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n Perhaps the question itself is phrased too humanly.<\/p>\n\n After all, a jumping spider doesn\u2019t have to perceive the world the way we do.<\/p>\n\n Its reality consists of movements, vibrations, contrasts, distances, potential jumping targets, prey, and danger.<\/p>\n\n And within this completely different world, it apparently possesses a remarkably powerful decision-making system.<\/p>\n\n So is a jumping spider as smart as a sheep?<\/p>\n\n No. This comparison doesn\u2019t hold up scientifically.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n But actually, it would almost be a shame to try to make jumping spiders interesting only by comparing them to a mammal.<\/p>\n\n After all, their actual abilities are impressive enough on their own.<\/p>\n\n Jumping spiders can learn.<\/p>\n\n They can change their strategy.<\/p>\n\n Some can distinguish between quantities.<\/p>\n\n They recognize complex movement patterns.<\/p>\n\n They can store information in short-term memory.<\/p>\n\n Portia<\/em> can choose complicated detours and follow a target that is temporarily out of sight.<\/p>\n\n And recent research even suggests that our well-known Phidippus regius can recognize individual members of its own species<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n Perhaps, therefore, the question shouldn\u2019t even be:<\/p>\n\n \u201cIs a jumping spider as intelligent as a sheep?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n But rather:<\/p>\n\n How does an animal that fits on a fingertip manage to do all these things with such a tiny nervous system?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n And so far, science has only a partial answer to that very question.<\/p>\n\n The more we learn about jumping spiders, the clearer it becomes that:<\/p>\n\n Behind those big eyes lies much more than one would initially expect from such a small creature.<\/p>\n\n If you have any further questions, please leave them in the comments below the article.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" If you watch a jumping spider for a while, you\u2019ll quickly get a strange feeling.
