Suddenly, you\u2019ll see a foamy structure hanging from a branch or under the lid: Your praying mantis has built an ootheca. Her eggs are inside. Now begins an exciting waiting period\u2014and the best opportunity to prepare for the potential offspring at your leisure. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

What should stay with the female, and what should go in its own container? How moist does it need to be, and what kind of food do the tiny mantises need? Here, we\u2019ll guide you from egg-laying through the first few days after hatching. The species of your praying mantis is always the deciding factor. <\/p>\n\n

What is an ootheca\u2014and is it fertilized?<\/h2>\n\n

An ootheca is the protective egg case of a mantis. When laying her eggs, the female produces a soft, foamy mass that subsequently hardens. The shape and size vary depending on the species: Some egg cases are elongated, while others appear more rounded. Behind this unassuming casing, a few or a large number of nymphs may develop. <\/p>\n\n

An ootheca alone does not prove successful reproduction.<\/strong> Even unmated females can lay eggs. For most mantises kept in captivity, fertilization is necessary; there are exceptions for certain species. Observing a mating increases the likelihood of offspring, but does not guarantee hatching. Therefore, do not cut open the egg case to check. <\/p>\n\n

A freshly laid ootheca: stay calm for now<\/h2>\n\n

Leave the female undisturbed while she lays her eggs. Take a photo of the completed clutch in its original location and note the species and the date of laying. The photo will help you maintain the original orientation later on. If the female was already an adult when you acquired her, also note whether a previous mating is known. <\/p>\n\n

Wait until the shell has hardened before moving it. As a general guideline, this takes a few days\u2014often about three to five. Do not press on the clutch to test its firmness. If it is attached to a removable twig, you can move the twig\u2014along with the ootheca\u2014later. This is easier than removing the foam nest. <\/p>\n\n

If it is stuck directly to a pane of glass or the lid and the carrier cannot be removed, do not try to pry it off by force. Instead, check how it is attached by taking a photo. Plan to keep the young in a separate enclosure: The adult female may eat them. <\/p>\n\n

Storing the ootheca: Air, support, and space at the bottom<\/h2>\n\n

The hatching container needs a lid that closes securely and fine-mesh ventilation gauze. Small nymphs and their food flies must not be able to escape through any gaps. At the same time, air must be able to circulate. A suitable container you already have will suffice; you don\u2019t necessarily need a special incubator for this. <\/p>\n\n

Secure the branch firmly and in the same position as before. There must be free space beneath the hatching area: When they emerge, the young will initially hang downward. A common guideline is to leave at least five centimeters of free space; for larger species, allow more accordingly. Twigs, substrate, and decorations must not block this path. <\/p>\n\n

The size of the container also depends on the species and the expected number of young. A small container is not a long-term rearing solution for a large clutch. Avoid exposed adhesive surfaces. We\u2019ll explain the mounting options in the next section. Especially for your first clutch, an intact laying branch is the clearer solution. <\/p>\n\n
