Body size, wings, and antennae can provide additional clues. Here\u2019s how to compare these characteristics without disturbing your insect.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it&#8217;s a ghost mantis or an orchid mantis: the species and stage of development are always part of the identification process. With very small nymphs, it&#8217;s often better to wait and see rather than make a seemingly certain identification based on a blurry photo. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:clamp(40px, 8vw, 100px)\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Determining the Sex of a Praying Mantis: Comparing Abdominal Segments<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many mantises, eight visible abdominal segments can be counted on the underside of the abdomen in males and six in females. The underside is important: the segmentation on the back is not the same. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the body, the segments may be hidden or difficult to distinguish. Therefore, the shape of the last visible abdominal segment is another important clue. Females typically have a larger terminal segment there; in males, the end appears more finely subdivided. Whenever possible, compare animals of the same species and at a similar stage of development.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/insektenliebe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/mantide-geschlechter-lupe1.png\" alt=\"mantid-gender-loupe1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:clamp(40px, 8vw, 100px)\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identifying a Praying Mantis: A Clear View<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Place the mantis on a transparent wall or a suitable branch.<\/li><li>Take a photo of the entire underside of the abdomen, making it as sharp as possible and avoiding any angled perspectives.<\/li><li>Zoom in on the shot instead of holding the animal still or turning it around.<\/li><li>Record the species and the known larval stage.<\/li><li>If the last plates are not clearly visible, repeat the observation later.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not hold the animal by its abdomen when doing so. During and immediately after molting, the mantis should be left undisturbed. To determine the sex of a praying mantis, a smartphone capable of taking clear photos is often sufficient; no additional equipment is necessary.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:clamp(40px, 8vw, 100px)\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Juveniles: Why Early Identification Can Be Difficult<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As they grow larger, their characteristics become more easily recognizable. Experienced keepers can identify some animals at an early stage, but a specific stage such as L3 is not a universal safety threshold. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor does a difference in growth rate indicate gender. Males and females can develop differently depending on the species. A blanket statement such as \u201cMales molt two to three times less often\u201d does not apply to all mantises.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:clamp(40px, 8vw, 100px)\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sex Determination in Adult Mantises<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many species, females are sturdier and males are slimmer. Antennae and wing length may vary. These characteristics are particularly helpful when directly comparing individuals of the same species. Not every female has short wings, and not every male can be identified solely by its flight behavior.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In winged species, the fully developed wings appear after the final molt. However, this does not mean that every newly adult animal is already ready to mate. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/insektenliebe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/IMG_1734.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1734\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:clamp(40px, 8vw, 100px)\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Correctly Classifying Ghost Mantises and Orchid Mantises<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of the ghost mantis, Phyllocrania paradoxa, body shape and antennae can provide additional clues. Use the comparison image along with the view from below. Individual distinctive physical characteristics should not replace a clear photograph of the underside.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/insektenliebe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/geistermantis-geschlechtsunterschied.png\" alt=\"ghost mantis sex difference\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of the orchid mantis, Hymenopus coronatus, the distinct difference in size is noticeable in the adult stage. Coloration and leg flaps can also be helpful. However, the color of a neck band alone is not a reliable indicator for every age or every photograph.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the number of segments you count does not match the expected count, first check the perspective and any hidden end plates. Do not use a different number from a single photo as a new rule for the entire species. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:clamp(40px, 8vw, 100px)\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sex determination does not yet mean approval for breeding<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not pair two animals based solely on a hunch. For a planned mating, the species, sex, maturity, and condition must be compatible. Also, make sure to have enough space and appropriate care available for any potential offspring.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not try to compensate for differences in maturity by using extreme temperatures. Keep both animals under conditions appropriate for their species.
