Short description:
Vriesea splendens is a species of plant in the Bromeliaceae family. It is also known under the name splendid Vriesea. Vriesea splendens an attractive and easy to care for bromeliad that is a real eye-catcher due to its showy bracts.
Vriesea splendens is native to the tropical regions of South America, especially Brazil and Argentina. There it grows as an epiphyte (perching plant) in the treetops of tropical rainforests, at altitudes between 500 and 1500 meters above sea level.
It forms a rosette of lanceolate leaves that can reach a length of up to 50 cm. From the rosette grows an inflorescence that can reach a height of up to one meter. The individual flowers are small and inconspicuous, but the bracts surrounding the inflorescence are very showy and bright red in color.
Vriesea splendens prefers light to partial shade locations and requires high humidity. It should be watered regularly, but waterlogging should not occur. The plant can also be sprayed occasionally to increase humidity.

Vriesea splendens is very suitable as a terrarium plant. In a terrarium, it can create a tropical atmosphere and provide a special visual effect with its striking bracts and long inflorescence.
To successfully cultivate Vriesea splendens in the terrarium, the humidity should be between 70 and 85% and the temperature should be between 15 and 27°C. So the plant prefers a relatively high humidity, which is usually already given in a closed terrarium.
