Xenesthis immanis – South America’s magnificent giant tarantula
Xenesthis immanisthe Colombian giant tarantula, is one of the largest and most impressive species of all. With a body length of up to 9 cm and a leg span of over 20 cm, its sheer size alone makes it look very imposing. Their dark body often shines purple or bronze – a real eye-catcher in the terrarium.
This species originates from the humid rainforests of Colombia. There it lives on the ground and digs deep burrows. It therefore also needs sufficient burrowable substrate in the terrarium. Forest humus mixed with a little clay is particularly suitable. A substrate height of at least 15 cm is ideal, as they like to create retreats.
The terrarium should have a minimum size of 40 × 30 cm have. Bigger is better, because Xenesthis immanis likes to move around. During the day it often stays in its den, but at night or when it is well furnished, it is often seen.
A tropical climate is crucial for keeping them. Temperatures between 24 and 28 °C are ideal, at night it may drop to around 20-22 °C. The humidity should be constant at 70-80 % lie. Keeping them alone is highly recommended, as this species is territorial. Other animals in the same terrarium would cause stress or even be injured.
