Vitalius chromatus – Popular species for tarantula keepers

Vitalius chromatus (ex. Nhandu chromatus) is one of the most conspicuous tarantulas from South America. The species originates from Brazil and lives there in tropical regions with a warm climate and loose soil. Its striking appearance makes it one of the most popular South American tarantulas in the terrarium hobby.

Particularly characteristic is the strong black and white drawing of the legs. The dark legs have striking light stripes, creating a very contrasting pattern. In addition, the abdomen usually has a dark coloration with reddish hairs. This combination makes Vitalius chromatus a particularly attractive species of tarantula.

The animals reach a body length of about 6-7 cm and can reach a considerable wingspan. This makes them look powerful and imposing in the terrarium.

Suitable for keeping is a floor terrariumas this species lives mainly on the ground. A terrarium from about 30 × 30 × 30 cm offers sufficient space for an adult animal. A sufficiently high layer of substrate is important so that the spider can burrow or at least create a safe hiding place.

A suitable substrate is burrowable substratefor example forest humus or special bird spider substrate. In addition, a Cork tube or root be offered as a hiding place. Such retreats give the spider security and reduce stress.

The temperatures in the terrarium can be between 24 °C and 28 °C lie. One Slightly increased humidity supports the well-being of the animals, but waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.

It is fed Vitalius chromatus with suitable feeder insects such as crickets, cockroaches or grasshoppers. Young animals are given correspondingly smaller prey.

Like many other South American tarantulas, this species also has stinging hairswhich it can shed if threatened. You should therefore proceed with caution when working in the terrarium and avoid unnecessary stress.

Thanks to its impressive contrasting pattern and its robust nature Vitalius chromatus is one of the most popular tarantulas in the terrarium hobby and delights both beginners and experienced keepers.
