Robust and peaceful: A portrait of Tliltocatl kahlenbergi
The tarantula Tliltocatl kahlenbergi is one of the rarer species in the genus, originates from Mexico and impresses with its robust physique, deep black basic coloration and a warm, reddish-brown shimmer on the abdomen. The dense pubescence is particularly striking, giving this species a velvety appearance. Its behavior makes it a grateful terrarium inhabitant: reserved, calm and not prone to stress – perfect for observation.
This species is very suitable for keeping individually in a terrarium from 30 x 30 x 30 cm. The substrate should be sufficiently deep, as Tliltocatl kahlenbergi likes to dig and retreat under pieces of cork or bark. Diggable soil, for example a mixture of forest humus and a little sand or clay, forms the perfect base. Cork tubes or half-embedded pieces of bark provide additional protection and retreat options.
The species comes from a rather drier habitat. Humidity should therefore be kept moderate, ideally around 60 %. A small moist corner in the substrate is often enough to create a stable microclimate. The temperature in the terrarium can be between 25 and 27 °C during the day and may drop to 20 °C at night. A water bowl is also part of the basic equipment to provide fresh drinking water at all times.
Tliltocatl kahlenbergi is an omnivore among spiders – crickets, cockroaches, grasshoppers and other common food animals are accepted without any problems. The animals are generally not very jumpy, remain calm and show a rather passive behavior. Defensive behavior such as throwing stinging hairs is possible, but rare – another plus point, especially for owners who value stress-free coexistence.
With a little patience, the animals will grow up, because as with most Tliltocatl species, development is rather slow. On the other hand, a female can live for many years and provide long-term pleasure with her calm nature. Males often live for one to two years after their last moult, while females are much longer-lived.
If you are looking for an uncomplicated, pretty tarantula that is also suitable for beginners, the Tliltocatl kahlenbergi have a lot of fun. It combines reserved behavior with a striking appearance and can be observed wonderfully in a well-structured terrarium.
