Tliltocatl albopilosusformerly known as Brachypelma albopilosum is one of the best known and longest established tarantula species in the terrarium hobby. The so-called “Hobby form does not refer to a wild population of its own, but to a stable offspring line that has been cultivated for decades and is characterized by robustness, calm behaviour and high adaptability.
Originally, Tliltocatl albopilosus comes from Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Honduraswhere it lives on the ground in rather open, sometimes slightly damp habitats. This origin is also reflected in its behavior. The species likes to dig, uses existing hiding places and yet regularly shows itself openly in the terrarium. It is precisely this balance of retreat and visibility that makes them particularly attractive to many keepers.
Visually, the “hobby form” stands out due to its dense, slightly curly hair, which gave it the name “curly hair tarantula” in the English-speaking world. Curly Hair Tarantula has brought in. The coloration usually ranges from brown to grey tones, but can vary depending on lineage and age. Even if it is not a brightly colored species, its body shape and hair make it look very present and original.
Tliltocatl albopilosus is extremely tolerant when kept. It copes well with moderate temperatures and does not require extreme climatic conditions. A structured substrate, a solid hiding place and a water dish are sufficient to create stable conditions. A substrate that is suitable for burrowing is important, as the animals actively use this behavior. At the same time, the species reacts calmly to minor fluctuations, which makes it particularly beginner-friendly.
In character, Tliltocatl albopilosus is considered calm and not very defensive. Although it has stinging hairs, it usually only uses them when it is disturbed. Instead of flight or aggression, it often displays a wait-and-see, almost stoic behavior. This is exactly what makes it an ideal species for people who want to observe without having to constantly expect hectic reactions.
The “hobby form” is also uncomplicated when it comes to feeding. It reliably accepts common food insects and shows clear, easily observable hunting behavior. With good care, females can reach an advanced age, making this species a long-term companion in the hobby.
