Therea bernhardti – Contrasting beauty with pattern

Therea bernhardti belongs to the so-called domino cockroaches and impresses with its high-contrast black and white markings. The striking pattern is reminiscent of dominoes and makes this species a real eye-catcher in the terrarium. At the same time, it looks elegant and calm, making it ideal for display and species tanks.

The species originates from India, where it lives in warm, rather dry to seasonally humid regions. In the terrarium, it therefore prefers a moderately moist setup with drier retreat zones. A mixture of forest humus, leaves and rotten wood provides ideal conditions. In addition, pieces of bark or flat stones provide safe hiding places, as the animals like to retreat during the day.

Therea bernhardti is mainly nocturnal. As soon as it gets darker, the animals come out of their hiding places and go in search of food. They move calmly and purposefully. This makes them easy to observe without appearing hectic. This makes them particularly interesting for owners who value relaxed behavior.

Their diet is uncomplicated. The animals eat leaves, plant remains and high-quality cockroach or isopod food. You can also offer vegetables or some pollen. A balanced protein supply is important, but without overfeeding. A small bowl of water or regular spraying of a corner will cover their moisture requirements.

With a body length of around 3 cm, adult animals remain compact. They reproduce moderately as long as the temperature and humidity are right. Temperatures between 22 and 27 °C are ideal. They benefit from good ventilation, as stagnant moisture should be avoided.

Therea bernhardti is suitable for both beginners and experienced keepers. The species is robust, decorative and relatively undemanding. At the same time, it brings a special aesthetic to the terrarium with its pattern and behavior. Anyone looking for an unusual but easy-to-care-for cockroach species will find a harmonious combination of elegance and functionality here.
