Theraphosa apophysis – Giant tarantula with pink tips
Theraphosa apophysis is one of the largest tarantulas in the world – not only in terms of body length, but also due to its impressive presence. This species originates from Venezuela and Colombia and is particularly striking due to its delicate, pink-colored foot tips. It is one of the most spectacular spider species to keep and is particularly popular with experienced keepers.
A terrarium with a base area of at least 50 × 40 × 40 cm is recommended, as this spider needs a lot of space. As a burrowing species, it also needs a deep layer of substrate. A mixture of diggable humus and a little sand provides stability. Cork tubes, pieces of bark and hiding places are a must, as the animals like to withdraw. A water dish should always be available.
The humidity should remain constant at around 80 %, whereby waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. Daily light spraying, preferably in the evening, helps to maintain the right microclimate. The temperature in the terrarium should be between 24 and 27 °C.
Theraphosa apophysis is mostly active at dusk or at night. During the day it often stays in its burrow. However, those who are patient will be rewarded with impressive moments – especially when feeding. This species eats greedily and attacks its prey with courage. Crickets, cockroaches, grasshoppers or adult food animals are regularly on the menu.
Although it looks imposing, it is usually more defensive than aggressive. However, if threatened, it readily uses its stinging hairs, which are particularly fine and highly irritating. Caution is therefore advised. It is therefore less suitable for beginners, but all the more suitable for lovers of large, impressive tarantulas.
With sufficient space, high humidity and a calm environment, this giant can be kept successfully. If you are looking for a real rarity, you will find it at Theraphosa apophysis an eye-catcher with character and strength.
