Stromatopelma calceatum – A breathtaking flash in the terrarium
Stromatopelma calceatumalso known as West African Horned Baboon is one of the most impressive tree tarantulas you can keep in a terrarium. This species originates from the tropical forests of West Africa and displays behavior that is as fascinating as it is intense. Its striking pattern, high speed and self-confident demeanor make it a spider that will delight experienced keepers in particular. It moves at lightning speed, uses every branch and builds elaborate webs that resemble small tube systems. This makes it look like a living shadow in the terrarium, gliding between light and structure.
Their coloring is warm and earthy, often with golden and brown tones that reflect their natural origin. At the same time, light and dark contrasts create a strong visual impact. The striking patterns on its legs are particularly striking, giving it an almost ornamental appearance. Although it tends to keep to itself during the day, with a bit of luck it will show itself in the evening and explore its territory with impressive ease.
A terrarium measuring 20 × 20 × 30 cm is suitable for keeping them. As it lives completely vertically, you should offer it plenty of climbing opportunities. Pieces of bark, cork tubes and branched twigs give it the opportunity to act out its natural behavior. It uses every structure to create stable burrows, which it will continue to expand over the years. Good ventilation is important, as their habitat is moist but well aerated. Slightly moist forest humus is sufficient, and a small bowl of water supports the microclimate.
Temperatures may be between 24 and 28 °C during the day. At night, a drop to 20 °C is sufficient. Ideally, the humidity should remain between 70 and 80 %. Targeted spraying in a corner creates a climate that comes very close to the natural environment. Springtails and Isopods in the substrate also make maintenance easier, as they quickly remove food residues.
When handling Stromatopelma calceatum caution is necessary. She is fast, self-confident and defends her territory. Nevertheless, her behavior is clear and understandable. With calm and respect, it can be observed very well without you having to intervene directly. Its hunting behavior is spectacular, as it uses rapid movements and precise bites to safely overpower prey such as crickets or cockroaches.
If you are looking for a spider that is powerful, unique and full of energy, you will find it in Stromatopelma calceatum a species that never fails to impress in the terrarium and never gets boring.
