Brief description Shelfordella lateralis “Chocolate cockroaches”:

Shelfordella lateralis “chocolate cockroaches” have a soft chitinous shell. This species is therefore popular as a food animal for many reptiles, spiders and amphibians. Compared to other food sources such as crickets, it contains a higher proportion of protein, is easier to breed and produces hardly any odor. This is why they are becoming increasingly popular with amphibian and reptile lovers. However, they should be handled with care! Shelfordella lateralis “chocolate cockroaches” also reproduce in the home.

Healthy treats for all insect eaters:

Protein 28.7 %
Fat 10.9 %
Crude ash 2.4 %

Breeding is very simple and can be easily realized with a container with a lid and ventilation, egg cartons, protein food and a drinking trough. Shelfordella lateralis “chocolate cockroaches” reproduce quickly. The females lay an egg package in the form of an ootheca every 2-3 weeks. The approx. 30 eggs are well protected in the ootheca. The nymphs are approx. 3 mm in size and hatch after 2-4 weeks. Depending on the temperature, the nymphs become sexually mature after 4 months.

You can find more information on breeding in our Insektenliebe complete feeding cockroach set.
