Sandinista lanceolatum – Rare ground-dwelling tarantula from Central America
Sandinista lanceolatum is a fascinating and rather rare tarantula species from Central America, more precisely from regions in Nicaragua and neighboring areas. It mainly inhabits dry to semi-dry habitats there, where it withdraws into self-dug burrows or under stones and roots. Its body structure is robust and its coloration is mostly earthy-brown to grey-brown, which provides excellent camouflage in its natural habitat.
This species is a ground-dwelling tarantula and exhibits a rather quiet, sometimes reclusive behavior. If disturbed, it generally withdraws into its burrow, but can react defensively if necessary. Its powerful burrowing abilities make it an exciting terrarium inhabitant, as it actively shapes its environment.
A terrarium with a base area of at least 30 × 30 cm and a good substrate height of 15-20 cm is recommended in order to provide sufficient burrowing opportunities. A burrowable substrate of coco humus, clay and forest soil is ideal. The humidity should be moderate at around 60-70 %, with a temperature between 24 and 27 °C during the day and a slight drop at night.
Feeding is uncomplicated. Sandinista lanceolatum accepts various food insects such as crickets, cockroaches or grasshoppers. Young animals can be given smaller food regularly, while adults should be fed at longer intervals to avoid overfeeding.
For experienced keepers, this species offers an exciting addition to the collection, especially due to its natural behavior and appealing appearance. Anyone who enjoys keeping animals with active digging behavior and a rather natural, unobtrusive play of colours will find Sandinista lanceolatum very appealing.
