Between camouflage & temperament: Psalmopoeus reduncus

Psalmopoeus reduncus is a medium-sized, tree-dwelling funnel web spider from the warm and humid mountain regions of Costa Rica.

Its slender, climbing stature and earthy color spectrum with brown-beige tones make it almost invisible in natural terrariums – a real specialist in camouflage. On a cork tube trunk like the one in your picture, it almost blends in with the bark. It is precisely these natural structures that it absolutely needs when kept: Vertical surfaces, places to retreat to and a well-placed cork tube make life in the terrarium stress-free and species-appropriate for them.

Psalmopoeus reduncus appears comparatively frequently – especially in the evening or after spraying. This is what makes them so exciting for many keepers. Their agility and lightning-fast retreat behavior regularly cause amazement, and you quickly notice: Psalmopoeus reduncus is not an animal for a simple floor terrarium. It wants to get up high and instinctively lives in crevices, tree hollows or between thick bark slabs.

As far as the climate is concerned, it prefers a warm climate with medium-high humidity of 70-80%. Regular, targeted humidification is ideal – especially around the bark or the preferred hiding place. However, excessive humidity throughout the terrarium should be avoided. A well-ventilated setup is mandatory. Humidity can be increased selectively, for example by daily spraying near their tube.

In terms of food, it takes crickets, cockroaches and, from a certain size, medium-sized grasshoppers. Typical of Psalmopoeus species: its prey-catching behavior is explosive but precise. Anyone who has observed them hunting will not forget this moment in a hurry.

This species is very suitable for beginners, as they do not attack, but rather withdraw. It is therefore the perfect species to start with arboricolous species. It is best to provide it with a lovingly furnished, well-designed habitat and you will be rewarded with a lively and exciting terrarium inhabitant.
