Porcellio scaber “White Out” belongs to the most extreme color formsthat exist in Isopods. The animals are completely whitenot only the body, but even the compound eyes. compound eyes no longer show any dark pigmentation.

This creates an almost “ghostly” look that immediately catches the eye in the terrarium. The animals look particularly rich in contrast on a dark substrate and are excellent to observe.

This extraordinary appearance is the result of targeted color selection over many generations. The lightest animals are repeatedly mated with each other so that the pigmentation is gradually reduced.

Genetically, one speaks here of a strong reduction or complete absence of melanin. In many cases a recessive mutation before. This means that both parents must carry the corresponding gene for the offspring to appear completely white.

This characteristic becomes more stable with each subsequent generation. Through consistent selection, a line is finally created in which hardly any pigments are left.

The species also remains uncomplicated to care for. A classic setup with leaves, wood and a slightly moist substrate is completely sufficient.
