Poecilotheria regalis – India’s elegant ornamental tarantula

Poecilotheria regalisthe Indian ornamental tarantula, is one of the most impressive tree-dwelling species. Its black, white and yellow pattern, its size and its agility make it a real eye-catcher in the terrarium. It originates from southern India, where it lives in tree hollows and crevices. A vertically structured high terrarium with plenty of hiding places is therefore important.

The terrarium should measure at least 30 × 30 × 45 cm. Larger dimensions are even better. This species likes high humidity of around 70-80 % at temperatures between 24 and 28 °C. A damp cushion of moss and regular spraying help to maintain these values. At the same time, good ventilation ensures a stable microclimate.

Contrary to popular opinion, group keeping of Poecilotheria regalis very well possible with appropriate furnishings. Females in particular are extremely socially compatible in sufficiently large terrariums with plenty of climbing and hiding places. It is important to provide a natural structure with vertical cork tubes, places to retreat and plenty of food so that competition does not arise in the first place. Many keepers report stable groups for months and even years – without any incidents. Young animals can also be raised well in groups. Nevertheless, the animals should be observed regularly to keep an eye on their social behavior. Keeping them in groups offers the opportunity to experience the natural behavior of this impressive species particularly intensively

Poecilotheria regalis is fast and reactive. It withdraws when disturbed – but can also react defensively. A bite is rare, but very painful. This spider is therefore more suitable for experienced keepers. However, those who work with it calmly and carefully will hardly have any problems. It often shows itself when kept well and is easy to observe.

The furniture includes cork tubes, sturdy branches and hiding places. They are fed with medium-sized to large insects such as grasshoppers or cockroaches. Young animals grow quickly and require more moisture in order to moult well. Females live up to 12 years, males significantly shorter.

This spider is a real highlight for advanced keepers. Its behavior, colors and elegance make it a rewarding species – provided you have respect and knowledge.
