In its natural habitat, it inhabits dry, deciduous forests. There, as a tree-dwelling species, it lives primarily in tree hollows and sheltered crevices. That’s why you should also provide it with a high, well-protected hiding spot in the terrarium.

The Right Tall Terrarium

As a true tree tarantula, Poecilotheria metallica needs, above all, height. For an adult specimen, we recommend a tall terrarium measuring at least 30 × 30 × 45 cm.

A vertical cork tube or a large piece of cork bark forms the centerpiece of the setup. A tube into which the spider can retreat completely works especially well.

You can also add branches and plants. This creates additional hiding spots and pathways, while also making the terrarium look much more natural.

A water bowl should also be available at all times.

Moisture, yes—waterlogging, no

When keeping these animals, the terrarium should not be constantly wet. It is much more important to have a slightly moist area combined with very good ventilation.

As a general guideline, aim for a temperature of about 21–25 °C and moderate humidity of approximately 65–75%. The substrate should be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings.

Especially with Poecilotheria, high humidity should never be confused with damp, stagnant air. That is why good air circulation is more important than constant misting.

Lightning-fast and not for beginners

Anyone encountering a Poecilotheria for the first time will quickly understand why these animals are recommended only for experienced keepers. Poecilotheria metallica can move extremely quickly and may suddenly flee if disturbed.

In most cases, the animal first tries to retreat to its hiding place. However, if it is cornered or cannot escape, it may also defend itself.

Added to this is the stronger venom typical of Poecilotheria. Symptoms following a bite include severe pain and muscle cramps, among others. Therefore, it is essential to avoid being bitten.

The terrarium must therefore close securely, and any work done inside it should be well planned. Relocating the animals should also be done only with the appropriate tools.

Interesting Behavior in the Terrarium

If you provide the spider with a vertical cork tube or a similar hiding place, it will often take it and expand it with its web.

During the day, the animal prefers to stay in a sheltered spot, while it may become more active as it gets darker. As a result, Poecilotheria metallica is not a tarantula that constantly sits out in the open in its terrarium.

Yet it is precisely this behavior that makes up part of their charm. When the vividly blue creature emerges from its hiding place in the evening, the sight is all the more impressive.
