Poecilotheria metallica – The sapphire spider for your high terrarium

Poecilotheria metallica, also known as Gooty Sapphire, is one of the most spectacular tarantula species in terms of color. Its intense, shimmering metallic blue coloration with contrasting yellow leg rings is unique in the world of spiders and makes it an absolute eye-catcher in the terrarium. Originally it comes from a highly restricted forest area in Andhra Pradesh in the south of India, which is why it is now considered highly endangered. Nevertheless, it is widely used in terrariums – mainly thanks to successful captive breeding.

This arboreal species prefers a vertically arranged terrarium with plenty of places to retreat, for example with pieces of bark, vertical branches and a cork tube in the upper area. A minimum size of 30 × 30 × 45 cm is recommended, but larger setups are often used. Temperatures should be between 26 and 28 °C during the day, it can cool down slightly at night. The optimum humidity is around 70 to 80 %, whereby the soil should not be wet all the time – a slightly damp retreat is completely sufficient, as long as there is good ventilation.

Their behavior is typical of many Asian tarantulas: It is extremely agile, very jumpy and immediately retreats when disturbed. A defense with a bite is rare, but should not be ruled out – its venom is considered potentially medically significant. It is therefore suitable for experienced owners with quick reactions, but not for beginners. Nevertheless, it is not aggressive in the classic sense – it displays fascinating, observable behavior when kept in a species-appropriate environment and calm.

Feeding is uncomplicated with crickets, crickets or cockroaches. Moulting also usually goes smoothly under suitable climatic conditions. However, their color development remains a highlight: even as juveniles they show their first blue facets, but only as adult females do they develop their full beauty. Males, on the other hand, remain more plainly colored and are much more delicately built.

If you are looking for a really special tree tarantula, you will find it in Poecilotheria metallica. This species combines impressive colors with an elegant movement style and is a real showpiece for naturally designed high terrariums.
