Silver-spotted climber: Philodendron scandens pictus in detail
The Philodendron scandens pictusalso known as “velvet philodendron” or “Scindapsus pictus”, is one of the most popular climbing plants for terrariums and living spaces. Its heart-shaped, velvety green leaves are covered with silvery, shimmering spots that give it a particularly elegant and tropical appearance. Its climbing and at the same time hanging growth makes it suitable for greening back walls in terrariums as well as for the decorative design of hanging baskets.
In nature, the Philodendron scandens pictus is native to the tropical rainforests of Central America. There it usually grows as a perching plant on trees, always in search of light and moisture. This origin is also reflected in the keeping conditions: the plant prefers high humidity, an even water supply and bright but indirect light conditions. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the sensitive leaves.
It is ideal for keeping in a terrarium, as it copes well with the typical warm and humid conditions there. Temperatures between 20 and 28 °C are ideal, as is a humidity of 70-90 %. The velvet philodendron grows moderately quickly and can be cut back regularly to keep it bushier or to control the direction of growth. With its climbing habit and attractive leaves, it creates a lively, tropical ambience that is not only pleasing to the eye but also enriching for the animal inhabitants.
For the philodendron to thrive optimally, it requires a light intensity of approx. 800-1,200 lumens. This keeps the silvery patterns intense and the plant grows compact and healthy.
