Philodendron scandens, also known as heart-leaf philodendron, is one of the most popular climbing plants for terrariums and interiors. Its heart-shaped, lush green leaves lend a natural, tropical atmosphere to any habitat and at the same time create retreats for small terrarium animals. Thanks to its robust and adaptable nature, it is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced plant lovers.

Philodendron scandens originally comes from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. There it grows in the dense treetops as a climbing and climbing plant, where it holds on with aerial roots. This characteristic makes it ideal for terrarium design: it can climb up back walls, branches or roots to create a lively, green structure.

For optimum growth, Philodendron scandens requires a consistently high humidity of around 70-80 %, which is common in tropical terrariums. The plant prefers temperatures between 20 and 28 °C, which makes it a versatile companion in warm habitats. In terms of light requirements, it is flexible: it thrives very well with 800-1,200 lumens, whereby indirect light or shaded areas are most suitable. Direct sunlight should be avoided as this can burn the leaves.

Philodendron scandens grows relatively quickly and its tendrils can easily reach a length of over one meter, making it ideal for greening larger areas. Regular pruning ensures that the plant remains compact and healthy, while cuttings can easily be used for propagation.

Thanks to its dense foliage, the heartleaf philodendron not only provides a decorative effect, but also a natural habitat for terrarium animals. Smaller reptiles, amphibians or invertebrates find shelter and climbing opportunities, which supports the animals’ well-being.
