Why Orphnaecus philippinus lights up every terrarium
Orphnaecus philippinus, often referred to as the Philippine Tangerine Tarantula, is one of the most colorful tarantulas from Southeast Asia. Its bright, intense orange color immediately attracts attention and makes it a species that immediately stands out in the terrarium. Depending on the light, the color appears warm and deep, giving this species an almost glowing look that clearly distinguishes it from many other species. Although it is beautiful, it is considered a species that should be kept with respect as it reacts quickly and has a very active temperament.
This spider comes from the Philippines and is accustomed to a humid tropical climate. It spends a lot of time in self-constructed burrows and often builds them in a surprisingly stable manner. This gives it a very natural behavior, which can be observed excellently in a well-equipped terrarium. A base area of at least 30 × 30 cm is advisable, as the species needs enough space to build its tunnels and spread out. A diggable, slightly moist substrate is crucial, as Orphnaecus philippinus is constantly working to shape and change its territory. If the substrate becomes too dry, it shows itself much less and withdraws deeper and deeper.
The temperature should be between 24 and 27 °C and the humidity between 70 and 80 %. Regular but careful spraying keeps the microclimate stable. One corner can remain more humid, while the rest of the terrarium dries out a little. This structure allows the spider to choose its own preferred area. A water dish is also a good idea, as it provides additional humidity and safety.
Orphnaecus philippinus is a very hungry species. It reliably accepts food animals such as crickets, cockroaches or grasshoppers and often reacts at lightning speed. Due to its high level of activity, it offers a lot of variety in the terrarium. At the same time, it likes to show itself off and is less shy than you would expect from a burrowing species. Nevertheless, it remains quick and somewhat unpredictable, which is why safe handling is important.
Anyone looking for a visually impressive and lively tarantula will find a fascinating companion in Orphnaecus philippinus. It combines a spectacular color effect with dynamic behavior, making it a highlight in any collection.
