Neoholothele incei – The social dwarf tarantula from Venezuela
Neoholothele incei is a small but extremely fascinating tarantula from the tropical regions of Venezuela. With a body size of only around 3-4 cm, it is one of the dwarf tarantulas, but impresses with its impressively complex behavior, its activity and – depending on the breeding form – its beautiful golden or olive-brown colouring with high-contrast markings.
The special thing about this species is its pronounced social compatibility: unlike many other tarantula species, Neoholothele incei can be kept in groups – a real highlight for anyone who enjoys observing natural colonies. Given sufficient space, good structure and adequate feeding, the animals live together peacefully for the most part, building a dense web of tunnels, burrows and spinning chambers. The complex web, which spreads throughout the entire terrarium after a short time, looks like an organic work of art and is an exciting example of the construction skills of these spiders.
A rather moist setup with good ventilation, around 70-80% humidity and temperatures between 24-28 °C, is suitable for keeping them. A loose substrate, such as our tried and tested forest humus, makes it possible to dig tubes and provides a good basis for the net structure. The animals feel particularly at home with moss, leaves, bark and plenty of hiding places. In group housing, it is advisable to keep animals of the same size together and create an environment that is as rich in structure as possible to prevent cannibalism – however, this is usually not a problem, especially when rearing young together from a cocoon.
Neoholothele incei eats small food animals such as micro crickets, Drosophila or later also small cockroaches. Thanks to its good appetite and rapid growth, this species is also suitable for beginners who want to familiarize themselves with colony keeping. It often shows itself and is active both during the day and at dusk – a nice advantage for anyone who likes to observe their animals.
Neoholothele incei is therefore an unusually social and exciting tarantula species that fascinates with its group dynamics, activity and web impression – ideal for anyone looking for a different kind of spider experience.
