Megaphobema robustum – An impressive species from South America
Megaphobema robustum is an impressive tarantula species from South America. Their natural habitat is in the tropical regions Colombia and Brazilwhere it lives in damp forest floors. Due to its strong physique and striking behavior, this species is one of the most fascinating tarantulas in the terrarium hobby.
The animals have a massive physique and reach a body body length of about 7-8 cm. Their legs usually show a striking coloration with reddish or orange parts, while the body itself is rather dark in color. This creates a beautiful contrast that makes this species visually very interesting.
Megaphobema robustum lives predominantly bottom dwelling and likes to lay tubes or hiding places in the substrate to. The terrarium should therefore contain sufficient substrate. A terrarium from about 30 × 30 × 30 cm offers sufficient space for an adult animal.
A suitable substrate is burrowable substratefor example forest humus or special bird spider substrate. One Cork tube or root can also serve as a retreat and gives the spider a sense of security.
The temperatures in the terrarium can be between 22 °C and 26 °C lie. As this species originates from more humid regions, the substrate should be be kept slightly moistwithout waterlogging. One good ventilation also ensures stable conditions in the terrarium.
It is fed Megaphobema robustum with suitable feeder insects such as crickets, cockroaches or grasshoppers. The animals exhibit interesting hunting behavior and usually accept prey reliably.
A special feature of this species is its defensive behavior with the hind legs. If disturbed, the spider may try to fend off attackers with rapid movements of its hind legs. You should therefore proceed calmly and carefully when working in the terrarium.
