Linothele sericata – When behavior and appearance inspire in equal measure

Linothele sericata is one of the most impressive funnel web spiders from South America. This species originates from the humid tropical regions of Colombia, where it lives close to the ground and builds gigantic web funnels. This is exactly the same behavior it exhibits in the terrarium, which is why it looks so unique. Its webs often spread out over several levels and transform the terrarium into a living network of silky, shiny structures.

Their appearance is also an eye-catcher. Linothele sericata has a dark base tone that is enhanced by slightly metallic reflections. Their legs appear velvety and strong. A light blue-green shimmer often appears under the light, which makes this species look particularly elegant. Although it is visually impressive, its nature remains rather shy and reserved. It is therefore easy to observe without quickly becoming stressed.

A terrarium from 30 × 30 × 30 cm offers enough space, because Linothele sericata likes to use both the ground and the sides. A deep substrate layer of slightly moist forest humus is important because they like to make short burrows. A cork tube or a bent branch serves as an ideal starting point for its web. After just a few days, it will begin to spin the entire environment artistically. This makes the terrarium look very natural and lively.

The temperature should be 24-27 °C, while 20-22 °C is perfectly adequate at night. An increased humidity of around 70-80 % is important, as this species comes from habitats with plenty of rain. Regular but targeted spraying keeps the climate stable. Good ventilation prevents waterlogging and ensures a healthy microclimate. A water tray completes the setup and provides additional security.

When feeding Linothele sericata active and eager to hunt. It reliably accepts food animals such as crickets, cockroaches and flies. Its lightning-fast attacks are spectacular and yet remain controlled. Despite its energy, it is not normally aggressive, but is very agile. Respectful handling is therefore important.

This species is suitable for keepers who love natural behavior and enjoy active web builders. Their bold colors, impressive webbing and elegant movements make them an attractive choice. Linothele sericata is an exotic beauty that immediately stands out in the terrarium.
