Gyna capucina – The shimmering porcelain cockroach

Gyna capucina, often referred to as the “porcelain cockroach”, is one of the most beautiful and elegant cockroach species in terraristics. Its name says it all: the animals look as if they are made of shiny porcelain. The delicate wings shimmer in soft shades of beige, cream and light brown, often with fine markings that vary slightly from animal to animal. This combination makes them a real gem in any terrarium.

Gyna capucina originally comes from the tropical regions of Africa, where it lives in warm, humid habitats. Exactly these conditions should also be recreated when keeping them: Temperatures of around 24-28 °C and a moderate to high humidity of 60-80 % are ideal. A well-ventilated terrarium with sufficient climbing and hiding places – such as bark, leaves and branches – provides a species-appropriate environment.

This cockroach species is mainly active at dusk and at night. During the day, the animals like to hide under bark or in layers of leaves. They are able to fly, but rarely use their wings as a rule. They are very peaceful and unobtrusive to keep, which makes them an excellent choice for beginners as well as for those new to keeping cockroaches. as well as for experiencedholders.

Gyna capucina are not picky when it comes to food. They are just as happy to eat a variety of fruit and vegetables as leaves, fish food flakes or special cockroach food. A varied diet ensures healthy animals and promotes breeding. Reproduction is uncomplicated: Females carry their oothecae (egg packets) until shortly before hatching, which makes constant breeding possible.

With their gentle appearance, easy keeping and fascinating behavior, Gyna capucinaare not only a visual enrichment, but also an exciting animal to observe – both in the display and breeding terrarium
