Grammostola rosea – classic of terraristics

The Grammostola roseaalso known as the Chilean tarantula, is one of the most popular species in terraristics. It originates from the dry regions of Chile, where it lives in semi-desert landscapes. There it lives in self-dug burrows or uses natural hiding places under stones. This is precisely why it is ideal for dry, structured terrariums.

Grammostola rosea is visually impressive due to its subtle yet elegant coloration. Depending on the form of origin, it shows pink to copper-colored shimmers on the carapace, while the abdomen usually appears brown to gray. Under light, the hairs often appear slightly metallic. It is precisely this simple coloration that gives it a natural, authentic appearance.

In terms of character, it is considered calm and comparatively relaxed. This makes it particularly suitable for beginners who want to gain their first experience with tarantulas. Nevertheless, it remains a real tarantula with its own temperament. It can use stinging hairs when disturbed, but usually remains defensive rather than offensive.

A terrarium from 30 × 30 × 30 cm is recommended for keeping them. As the species lives on the ground, the base area should be sufficiently large. A burrowable substrate, for example a mixture of clay and soil, enables natural behavior. At the same time, the setup should be kept rather dry, while a water bowl is always available. Temperatures between 22 and 26 °C are ideal.

Grammostola rosea is uncomplicated when it comes to feeding. Crickets, cockroaches or other suitable food insects are reliably accepted. However, this species is known for occasional feeding breaks. These can last several weeks or even months and are completely normal.

Their life expectancy is particularly impressive. Females can live for over 20 years, making them a long-term companion. Males usually reach a significantly lower age.

The Grammostola rosea combines robustness, calm behavior and a long lifespan in one species. If you are looking for an easy-care, relaxed tarantula, this is a timeless classic with character and charisma.
