Forage foliage – the basis for a functioning soil life

Forage foliage is one of the most important staple foods for many primary and secondary decomposers. These include, among others Isopods, springtails, millipedes (Diplopoda), enchytraea and many other soil organisms. In the wild, these animals mainly eat rotten leaves and not freshly fallen leaf material. This behavior can be observed very well in the forest floor. This is where the life of many decomposers begins in the lower layers of the leaf litter.

It is precisely this natural process that our fodder foliage. To make it easier for the animals to absorb the nutrients, we have fermented. During the fermentation process, microorganisms break down the Lignin partially. This makes the ingredients more readily available and the animals can utilize the leaves much more easily.

For the production we first use normal mixed foliagewhich we add water and special bacteria. The leaves then ferment for about for six weeks. During this time, the bacteria naturally break down the structure of the leaf material. As a result, the leaves decompose more quickly and become particularly attractive to decomposers.

During the fermentation process solid clumps of leaves. In the final step, we shred the material again. This loosens up the fermented leaves and allows them to be used later in the terrarium. Easy and even dosing.

Another important step is sterilization. Our fodder leaves are stored at least 72 hours at -26 °C. This allows us to reliably reduce possible companions such as Fungus gnats or mites. This gives you a clean and safe natural product for your terrarium.

The fermented fodder foliage is ideal as base feed and top layer in the terrarium. It supports the natural behavior of your soil police and at the same time ensures a functioning micro-ecosystem.
