Phormingochilus hati hati’: The dazzling acrobat of the rainforest
Phormingochilus hati hati is one of the most impressive arboreal tarantulas from Southeast Asia. Its name means “be careful” in Indonesian and thus describes the temperament of this species very well. It is one of the spiders that show clear body language, react quickly and yet fascinate with their beauty and presence. With its dark base color and shimmering blue and violet reflections, it is one of the most elegant species in the region. Under direct light, the metallic colors appear almost magical and give the species a unique aura.
Their physique is slender, powerful and perfectly adapted to life at height. The long legs enable quick movements and safe climbing. This allows them to use every branch, bark and structure in the terrarium. A high terrarium with at least 20 × 20 × 30 cm provides a good basis, but a little more height significantly increases the natural behavior. Branches, pieces of bark and robust plants are important as they form the basis for their home and safe retreats. The more varied the furnishings, the more natural the spider will appear.
The substrate should remain slightly moist so that the humidity remains stable at 70-80%. At the same time, like many Southeast Asian tree tarantulas, the species needs good ventilation. This creates a climate that remains humid but does not become stuffy. A temperature of 25-28 °C ensures that the spider remains active and eats well. Springtails act as little helpers in the soil and support hygiene, which is why they are particularly suitable for this species.
Phormingochilus hati hati is very agile when feeding. It pounces powerfully on crickets, cockroaches or grasshoppers and shows its enormous speed. A varied diet keeps it vital and growing reliably. Young animals develop their color reflexes early on, which later become more and more intense.
Anyone keeping this species will experience a tarantula that impresses both visually and behaviorally. It demands respect, but in return provides unique moments of observation. With a well-equipped terrarium and a little experience, Phormingochilus hati hati becomes a fascinating inhabitant that never ceases to amaze with its behavior and coloration.
