Cubaris spec. “Silver Tiger” – the silver striped starling from Southeast Asia

Cubaris spec. “Silver Tiger” is a rare and particularly attractive species of isopod that originally comes from the humid tropics of Southeast Asia. It owes its name to its striking pattern: silver to mother-of-pearl-colored stripes run across its dark grey to anthracite-colored body, giving it an elegant and almost shimmering appearance. In combination with its stocky body shape and the typical “Cubaris roll reflex”, it is a real eye-catcher in any terrarium.

In nature, this isopod species inhabits damp forest floors, often near rotting wood, layers of leaves and moss. It uses crevices, pieces of bark and stones as hiding places to protect itself from predators and excessive sunlight. This habitat can easily be recreated in the terrarium: A substrate of leaf humus, white rotten wood, added lime and a layer of leaves provides an ideal base. Moss cushions keep the humidity constant and create microhabitats that reflect the natural habitat.

The “Silver Tiger” prefers permanently slightly humid conditions at temperatures between 22 and 26 °C. At the same time, good ventilation is important to prevent mold growth. Hiding places made of cork bark, roots or stones are often used, and a moisture gradient in the tank helps the animals to choose their preferred zone themselves.

Cubaris spec. “Silver Tiger” is not only a visual highlight, but also a valuable helper in bioactive setups. It decomposes organic material such as leaves and wood, thus contributing to nutrient recycling and keeping the soil system healthy. Under optimal conditions, the species reproduces reliably. Females carry their offspring in the marsupium (brood pouch) until they are fully developed – a fascinating behavior that can be observed with a bit of luck.

With its unique coloration, its usefulness as ground police and its interesting behavior, the “Silver Tiger” is a worthwhile choice for both experienced keepers and newcomers to isopod keeping.
