Cubaris “Panda King Pink”: Color meets function in the microhabitat

If you want to enhance a bioactive terrarium, this beauty is a must: Cubaris spec. “Panda King Pink” is one of the most sought-after cultivated forms of the genus Cubaris – and quite rightly so. With their high-contrast white and pink coloration and typical round body structure, these animals are an absolute eye-catcher.

Like the classic “Panda King”, this variant also originates from Vietnam, although the exact origin is not clearly documented – typical of many Cubaris-species. The “pink” variant is distinguished by its pale pink to pink segments on the head and abdomen, which shimmer gently depending on the intensity of the light. This coloration usually only develops fully in the subadult stage.

The “Panda King Pink” is rather reserved in its attitude, but very social. The animals form small groups, like to hide in moss, bark or pieces of cork and prefer a stable microclimate with high humidity. However, they do not like it too humid – a balanced Wet-dry gradient in the tank is important, as with most Cubaris-species. A permanently moist area with moss or damp leaves and a dry part with cork bark or bark mulch offer the best conditions.

A suitable substrate is a mixture of Forest humus, white rotten wood, leaves and lime components. The animals feed on leaves, decaying wood, organic vegetables, special isopod food and also like to consume minerals via cuttlebone. Temperatures between 22-26 °C are ideal, with constantly high humidity around 70-80 %.

Reproduction is not a problem under suitable conditions. The young are particularly cute with their pastel coloration.

Cubaris spec. “Panda King Pink” is not only beautiful, but also functional – as part of the ground police or as a pure display species in the tank. For patient keepers with a sense of aesthetics, this species is a worthwhile addition – quiet, decorative and a little more spectacular with every moult.
