Cubaris spec. “Lemon Blue” – color contrast in a class of its own

Cubaris spec. “Lemon Blue” is one of the most spectacular Isopods in terms of color. Its combination of bright yellow body segments and deep blue to steel-grey carapace plates looks almost surreal – as if it has sprung from a tropical coral reef. This strong contrast makes them an absolute eye-catcher in any isopod keeping and a favorite among collectors.

When kept, “Lemon Blue” prefers temperatures between 22 and 26 °C with a high humidity of around 70-80 %. As with many Cubaris species, a balanced wet/dry zone in the terrarium is important in order to provide both optimal moulting conditions and retreats. Moss areas, cork tubes and pieces of bark are readily accepted as hiding places, while a dense layer of leaves and white rotten wood serve as food and habitat.

The substrate should be loose and rich in humus, preferably a mixture of forest soil, leaf humus, cork granules and added lime. In addition to the natural food from the substrate, they like to eat vegetables, dried leaves and protein food. A cuttlebone should always be available as a source of calcium to support the strong shell.

“Lemon Blue” is a rather quiet species, but can be observed to be quite active in good conditions. Their young are initially lighter in color and only develop their full color splendor as they get older, which makes them particularly exciting for breeders.

Breeding requires stable conditions and patience, because like many Cubaris species, the Lemon Blues also reproduce moderately. The joy is all the greater when the first colorful juveniles appear in the moss.
