Armadillidium werneri “Orange” – The luminous woodlouse

Armadillidium werneri “Orange” is an unusual and visually very attractive woodlouse. Particularly striking is its strong orange basic colorationwhich clearly distinguishes them from many other isopod species. This intense color makes the animals a real eye-catcher in the terrarium.

The body structure is typical for representatives of the genus Armadillidium. The animals have a robust, slightly curved shell and reach a medium size. Like all woodlice, they can curl up completely into a ball when in danger. This behavior serves as protection from predators and is also an exciting feature for observations.

Their striking color makes Armadillidium werneri “Orange” Particularly suitable for terrarium keepers who want to keep a decorative and interesting isopod species. The color effect is particularly effective in a group.

They are relatively uncomplicated to keep and are similar to many other woodlice. A suitable substrate is a mixture of Deciduous forest humus, white rotten wood components and a thick layer of leaves. This substrate serves both as a habitat and as the main food source.

In addition Mosses, pieces of bark or cork bark are offered as hiding places. These structures provide a stable microclimate and offer the animals safe retreats.

The terrarium should have a humid and a drier zone available. This allows the animals to choose their preferred environment themselves. However, waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.

The optimum temperature is usually between 20 and 26 °C. Moderate humidity supports the animals’ activity and ensures stable conditions in the terrarium.

Like many Isopods, these animals also need a source of calcium for the structure of their shell. Cuttlebone, limestone or crushed eggshells are very suitable for this.

The diet consists mainly of Foliage and white rotten wood. Vegetables, fruit, flowers and special isopod food are also readily accepted.

With its intense color, the typical rolling behavior and the relatively uncomplicated attitude is Armadillidium werneri “Orange” is an exciting addition to any isopod keeping and a special highlight in near-natural terrariums.
