Armadillidium vulgare “Magic Potion” – The legendary designer Isopod

Armadillidium vulgare “Magic Potion” is one of the best known and most popular isopod species in the terrarium hobby. The animals immediately stand out due to their Conspicuous color pattern on. The light base color is interspersed with irregular yellow and black spots. This creates a unique pattern that is reminiscent of a magic potion – hence the name “Magic Potion”.

This color form was originally created in Japan through targeted selection of Armadillidium vulgareone of the most common woodlice species worldwide. Due to its striking markings, it quickly developed into one of the most popular designer Isopods in the terrarium hobby.

The animals reach a size of about 1.5 to 2 cm and have the typical, strong physique of the genus Armadillidium. Like all woodlice, they can curl up completely into a ball when in danger. This behavior protects them from predators and at the same time makes them particularly interesting to observe.

A major advantage of this species is its robustness and adaptability. This makes Armadillidium vulgare “Magic Potion” suitable for both beginners and experienced keepers. The animals are relatively active and can be observed frequently if the terrarium structure is good.

The recommended substrate is a mixture of deciduous forest humus, white rotten wood components and a thick layer of leaves. These materials serve both as food and as a habitat. In addition, moss, pieces of bark or cork should be offered as hiding places.

The terrarium should have a humid and a slightly drier zone own. This allows the animals to choose their preferred environment themselves. Waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.

The optimum humidity is usually between 60 and 80 %while temperatures of about 20 to 26 °C offer ideal conditions.
