Armadillidium spec. “Casteldaccia” is one of the most eye-catching woodlice in the terrarium hobby. The animals impress with their unusual color pattern. The base color is a dark grey that extends to the antennae and legs. A striking yellow ochre to gold tone shimmers between the individual segment plates. This combination creates a unique appearance in the terrarium.
The great variability of the gold content is particularly exciting. Some animals only show slight golden accents, while others are significantly more strongly colored. This is precisely why many keepers are currently working on so-called “High Gold” linesin which the golden part is particularly intense. Anyone who enjoys breeding projects will find this species an exciting challenge.
The physique appears strong and massive and is strongly reminiscent of Armadillidium gestroi. The animals curl up into a tight ball when in danger, which is typical of woodlice. This means they are well protected and fascinating to watch at the same time.
The attitude of Armadillidium spec. “Casteldaccia” is considered uncomplicated and is therefore also suitable for beginners. The basic setup follows the classic requirements of many woodlice. A mixture of forest humus and white rotten wood is suitable as a substrate. A layer of forage leaves is placed on top, which also serves as food and cover. A permanently moist moss corner should also be provided so that the animals can regulate their humidity.
A source of calcium such as cuttlefish shell is also recommended. You can also offer protein-rich supplementary food from time to time. This will support growth and reproduction.
The animals come from Casteldaccia in Sicilya region in the province of Palermo. They usually live there from an altitude of around 450 meters. Their natural habitat is characterized by loamy soils and olive groves. They find shelter under the olive trees and feed mainly on the falling leaves.
This origin means they are adapted to dry summer periods adapted. The terrarium may therefore also have somewhat drier areas. An average humidity of about 70 % has proven itself in husbandry.
The species reproduces as reliably as many other woodlice. Under suitable conditions, stable offspring are quickly produced. This makes it suitable for Armadillidium spec. “Casteldaccia” for beginners as well as for experienced keepers who want to keep a special and visually impressive isopod species.
