Armadillidium spec. “Albino” – High-contrast eye-catcher in the terrarium

Armadillidium spec. “Albino” is an unusual color form that immediately catches the eye due to its almost white to cream-colored appearance. In contrast to wild-colored representatives, this variant appears almost transparent and thus sets impressive accents in the terrarium. A fascinating contrast is created, particularly on dark substrate or between brown foliage, which makes the animals stand out clearly.

Like all representatives of the genus Armadillidium, this form also has the ability to curl up completely in the event of danger. This effectively protects its sensitive underside. This typical curling behavior not only makes woodlice exciting to watch, but also clearly distinguishes them from other isopod species.

For the keeping of Armadillidium spec. “Albino” a well-structured terrarium with clearly defined humidity zones is recommended. Therefore, set up a permanently slightly moist corner, while the rest of the area remains only moderately moist. This allows the animals to actively regulate where they want to be. This choice reduces stress and supports stable development.

A mixture of forest humus, white rotten wood and fodder leaves is suitable as a substrate. The humus stores moisture, while rotten wood provides important microorganisms and also serves as a source of food. White rotten wood is particularly popular as it is soft and contains lots of nutrients. Make sure that the substrate remains loose so that oxygen can circulate and waterlogging does not occur.

A thick layer of foliage should never be missing. It not only serves as the main source of food, but also as permanent cover. Oak or beech leaves in particular have proven their worth, as they decompose slowly and therefore provide a continuous supply of food. At the same time, stable microclimate zones are created under the leaves where Isopods feel safe.

You can also add small pieces of wood or cork. These create additional hiding places and increase the structure in the tank. The more varied the setup is, the more naturally the animals will behave. This not only supports their health, but also allows you to observe more active and balanced behavior.

Humidity should be moderate to high, and waterlogging must be avoided. Good ventilation prevents mold growth and ensures a stable microclimate. In addition to foliage, the animals will happily accept isopod food, vegetables and protein-rich supplementary food in small quantities.

Armadillidium spec. “Albino” is suitable both for species tanks and as decorative soil police in moist terrariums. It supports the biological cycle as it decomposes organic material and thus contributes to cleanliness. At the same time, it impresses with its special appearance and calm behavior.

If you are looking for a bright, high-contrast tassel that is both functional and decorative, the Armadillidium spec. “Albino” an excellent choice.
