Exciting to observe and easy to care for

Armadillidium peraccae is an attractive and robust woodlouse from southern Europe. The animals mainly originate from regions around the Mediterranean and can be found there in leaf litter, under stones or in loose soil. Due to its adaptability, this species has also proven to be particularly easy to care for in terrariums.

The animals have a subtle gray-brown basic colorationwhich gives them a natural and unobtrusive appearance. This allows them to blend harmoniously into near-natural terrarium landscapes. Like all representatives of the genus Armadillidium the animals can curl up completely into a ball in case of danger. This typical behavior serves as protection from predators and also makes them interesting to watch.

With a size of about 1.5 to 2 cm Armadillidium peraccae is one of the medium-sized woodlice. They are relatively active and often appear on the surface when conditions are right. The animals can be observed regularly, especially in well-structured terrariums with sufficient foliage and hiding places.

Keeping is considered uncomplicated and is therefore also suitable for beginners in isopod keeping. A mixture of deciduous forest humus, white rotten pieces of wood and a thick layer of leaves is recommended as a substrate. These materials serve both as food and as a habitat. In addition, moss, pieces of bark or small pieces of cork should be offered as shelter.

A permanently slightly damp corner in the terrarium is important, while other areas can remain somewhat drier. This allows the animals to choose for themselves what humidity they need. However, waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.

The optimum temperature is usually between 20 and 26 °C. Under these conditions, the animals develop well and reproduce reliably. Like many woodlice, they also need a Source of calcium for the structure of their shell. Cuttlebone, limestone or crushed eggshells are ideal for this.

The diet consists mainly of Foliage and white rotten wood. In addition, you can occasionally offer vegetables, fruit, flowers or special isopod food. High-protein supplements are also readily accepted and promote the growth of the colony.

Their robust nature, uncomplicated husbandry and reliable reproduction make Armadillidium peraccae is an ideal choice for natural Isopod boxes, bioactive terrariums or as an introduction to the fascinating world of Isopods.
