Armadillidium espanyoli “Marbelized” is an unusual and very attractive species of isopod from Spain. Particularly striking is its marbled color patternwhich gives each animal an individual pattern. No two Isopods are the same. This makes a group of these animals in the terrarium look particularly lively and varied.

The species belongs to the small Armadillidium species and is therefore also ideal for smaller terrariums or isopod boxes. Despite their compact size, the animals are easy to observe and exhibit interesting behavior.

The keeping of Armadillidium espanyoli “Marbelized” is relatively uncomplicated. However, the animals prefer a Slightly drier environment than many other isopod species. In practice, it has proven successful to only partially humidify the terrarium. This creates moist and dry areas. The animals can then decide for themselves which area they prefer.

In our breeding the terrarium is watered once a week about halfway. This method ensures a stable microclimate and prevents waterlogging at the same time.

Suitable soil substrates include Flake Soilwhich is also covered with a thick layer of foliage. The foliage serves as both food and protection for the animals. In addition, there should always be sufficient white rotten wood must be present, as this is also part of the natural diet.

Hiding places are also important. Especially Cork bark is often used by the animals as a retreat.

At slightly higher temperatures, the animals reproduce reliably and can produce produce offspring all year round. The gestation period is about 60 days. Compared to other Armadillidium species, the development time of the young is somewhat longerwhich is why a little patience is required when breeding.
