Archachatina marginata ovum – Impressive size, calm nature
Archachatina marginata ovum is one of the most impressive African giant snails of all. This subspecies of Archachatina marginata originally comes from West Africa, in particular from countries such as Ghana, Togo and Nigeria. There it lives in warm, humid forest areas with high humidity and constant temperatures. It is precisely this climate that you should recreate in the terrarium.
The body appears massive, strong and broad. The animals develop an imposing appearance and often reach body lengths of over 16 cm when fully grown, sometimes even more. Characteristic is the stable, thick-walled shell, which appears much more robust than that of many Achatina species. Their calm and deliberate nature makes them fascinating to observe in everyday life.
A spacious terrarium with sufficient floor space is recommended for keeping them. The soil layer should be deep so that the animals can burrow into it. Loose, slightly moist forest humus is ideal. The temperature should be between 24 and 28 °C. At the same time, this species requires a high humidity of around 75-85 %. Nevertheless, the tank must be well ventilated so that no mold develops.
Fresh vegetables, wild herbs and occasionally fruit serve as food. A constant source of calcium is particularly important through cuttlebones. This is the only way for the shell to develop stably and evenly. Supplements containing protein can also support growth.
Archachatina marginata ovum grows more slowly than many other giant snail species. However, the animals reach an impressive final size and can live for several years. Patience pays off here. If you create stable conditions and care for them regularly, you will be able to enjoy these extraordinary land snails for a long time.
This species is suitable for keepers with some experience, as the climate and hygiene must be constantly monitored. With the right care Archachatina marginata ovum develops into a calm, imposing and absolutely fascinating terrarium inhabitant.
