The configuration of the LEDs in a lamp is just as important for potential plant growth and the illuminated area as their spectrum and output. Like all life, plants are dependent on the quantity and quality of energy available to them from a light source. The greater the amount of light and the larger the illuminated area, the better the possible results. Any given light source can only produce a certain number of photons (energy packets) as “total light output”. As the light moves forward, it begins to spread out to cover a larger area. The further away a lamp is, the larger the area covered by light. However, the measured energy in the light becomes weaker the further away the lamp is from the target. To ensure that the maximum amount of light enters a housing, enough diodes must be used, spaced at the correct distance from each other and with a suitable spectrum, color and lumen output.
